Advice on camping at Cap d'agde

Hey all,

We have stayed at Cap several times now, but never camping. This year (August ish) we thought we may try staying in our tent.

While we have always made good use of the air-con and loved being in the centre of port nature, we were just wondering what are the down sides, and up sides of the camp site? Is there any must haves to take with you?

Any advice from seasoned campers welcomed.

Friends stayed in a tent and he got bitten to bits - actually he nearly collapsed in Clair Obscure due to poisoning! Had to have a week off work on return to UK.

Hi. We camped for the last 4 years until last year.

An Electric Hook up cable is a must.

Pitch the tent so the sleeping area will be in the shade at sunrise!

Mossie spray is also a must. Recommend Odomos.

The shower and toilet facilities are very good.

Just don't venture out in your finery until after dark! They are not keen on kids being able to see people all dressed up!

There is a green grocers, bakers, fresh fish stall and pizza place onsite plus a bar and entertainment area. Launderette etc.

Pluses. Very friendly, easy to make 'friends'. Easy for the beach, less than half the price! Very laid back, everyone smiles and says good morning/afternoon/evening.

Lot's of impromptu socialising, ie. stopping to chat for first time with people and ending up staying all afternoon have a drink and chat. Taxi(free) from the gate to your pitch late at night.

Minuses. Not being able to cool down with the help of aircon!

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks, that is really helpful. It does appeal to us, apart from the mosquitos

mozzies tend to come out after sunset.

Use mozzie spray and take hay fever tabs( anti histamine)

we used to get bitten a lot but now only once or twice per holiday and with the tabs hardly itch at all.

they get blown by the wind so if its windy its good news .

Don't sit near hedges etc.

still hot nights are the worse but mossies are everywhere in warm countries and in long dry spells the numbers are less. they need standing water to breed.

Had as many problems with mosquitoes in the apartments as on the camp site. You just need to be prepared, we always take (or buy there) insect repellent and fly spray.

Drink loads of Gin and Tonic and thy won't come near you. Shower and drip dry and you will stay cool all day. Lived in tropics and the best tip I have ever had. Your body temperature evaporate the water and lowers your temperature naturally. Works every time.oh and did I mention drink more Gin and Tonic. See you there if your early in august

We stayed in a tent for a few days in August last year. Facilities there were good. We brought one suitcase full of camping gear and one full of clothes. We didn't have mosquito problems, just make sure your tent is zipped up at all times so they don't get a chance to get in. Bring camping chairs to sit on or buy them there. You can't complain at about €40 per night.

Thanks all for your input. We typically stay in an apartment, around mid June and have never had an issue with mosquitos.

There's are lot of good advice, some of which we would not have thought of.

Hopefully see some of you there in August x

Lying at the southern end of the Bagnas wet land nature reserve the campsite will naturally be invaded by mosquitoes but the problem has increased exponentially over the last 7 years since the local authority stopped using the insecticides that used to keep the problem at bay.

The best solution are the body sprays obtained in Pharmacies and some of the larger supermarkets, citronella candles can have some effect and having an electric fan will also work wonders.

Drinking G&T's is a wonderful way to reduce the discomfort, especially if you drink lots but as a deterrrent you would have to consume over a gram of quinine each day or 15 gallons of tonic water, however, that being said, if mixed with gin you wouldn't be bothered how many mosquitoes there were!

Hi both

The main things to remember are an electric hook up, extension sockets and (most importantly) an electric FAN! (or two) We were fine in the tent in the heat with a few fans.

I have rarely been bitten by Mozzies... and they LOVE me!

Just put on repellant straight after your evening shower (I find Avon Skin So Soft oil works too and smells better than repellant!) before you sit outside your tent and plenty of large citronella candles around you.

If you forget anything, you can buy most things in the shops, or more cheaply at Hyper U if you want to travel outside the gate.

Any more questions, feel free to message

Gina xx

Also, if you can take a small fridge for cold drinks, that will be really handy. You can also hire them from the campsite, if you don't have room but don't know how much they charge, we have always taken our own xx

If you forget to bring anything there is a specialist camping shop in villenuve Bezier - Narbonne Accessories. Tent wise Decathalon just up the road from the camping shop.
