A word of warning to those travelling by car - the speeds limits on certain classes of road are being lowered

Taken from a recent press release

Une expérimentation de baisse de la limitation de vitesse à 80 km/h sur les routes secondaires a justement été menée en France entre 2015 et 2017, sur trois tronçons de 86 km au total.

An experiment lowering the speed limit to 80, on secondary roads (non duals) was actually in place in France between 2015 and 2017, on 3 different section of roads of a total of 86km

Dans une lettre adressée à un sénateur, et révélée par BFMTV, le Premier ministre précise que 20 accidents faisant 3 morts et 42 blessés ont été enregistrés sur ces trois portions entre le 1er juillet 2015 et le 1er juillet 2017, contre 67 accidents faisant 15 morts et 108 blessés sur les cinq années qui ont précédé l'expérimentation. "Ramenés à une échelle de deux ans, ces chiffres correspondent respectivement à 27 accidents, 6 tués et 43 blessés", observe le chef du gouvernement, qui voit dans ces résultats la preuve que ce test a porté ses fruits.

In a letter to a senator, the Prime Minister stated that 20 accidents with 3 deaths and 42 injured were recorded on these stretches of road between 1st July 2015 and 1st July 2017, against 67 accidents with 15 dead and 108 injured, in the five years preceding the experiment. Bring these figures down to 2 years, it evaluates as 27 accidents, 6 dead and 43 injured, which he sees that this test has provided proof that it works.

The new limit of 80kph comes into effect from 1st July. I assume to give them chance to change all the signposts? I think driver training courses would be more appropriate!!

This equates to 50mph, which is still a decent speed when a French white van man is coming at you in the middle of the road at the same speed !!

The impact of this will depend on what types of roads are classed as secondary. In the first period I'm sure they will see an overall increase in accidents as people get frustrated by the queues that will build up and then start overtaking more irrational than they already do. I've driven 200km today on what could be classed as secondary roads as they are not dual carriageway and you are lucky to find anyone staying at or below the current 90km limit.

France has the largest number of fixed speed cameras in Europe and they are very inventive in finding new ways to stop speeding, bad driving et al.

They have been using drones for this in the Aquitaine since late summer. Around Bordeaux alone hundreds of motorists have been caught and fined.

They are rolling the drones out across the country - so beware!

And if you are out on the beach etc beware of police helicopters. Someone near the Med coast has just been fined for mooning at a police helicopter. He hadn't realised just how powerful their camera lenses are !!!!

Having read a few articles regarding this change, we're fairly certain this will apply to any single carriageway road that is currently subject to a 90 kmh limit.

This is not always signed as 90 because it's the 'default' limit.

But as we all know, speed limits are only part of the problem. French drivers pay little heed to limits now, why should they stick to lower limits...?

Generally, the departmental roads are of an excellent standard. As opposed to the roads in the villages...!!

So if you drive sensibly, the KSI rate should be a lot lower.

And there's the answer. Better driver education, not just enforcement. If they do nothing to change the existing culture of tailgating, use of mobile phones, drink/driving and so on, then the figures won't change.

Until then, we continue to drive with the expectation that the next bend will present a car on our side of the road and heading straight towards us....!!

I think that the standard of driving is appaling in france. just look at their cars the nearside always has dents and scrapes. As for stopping to let pedestrians cross i'm sure they thinK the black and white markings are just pretty patterns. With the way they drive its a good thing their speed is lowered .they have a habbit of ignoring rules so thats why they have cameras and now drones. we drove down in 2016 and loved the quiet roads @50mph you see more anyway.

That’s just ridiculously slow, they need to put the speed up so we can get to Cap quicker.

Nothing to look at on those road, so it will cause more accident due to boredom, when you are driving fast people concentrate more that is a proven fact.

drive fast and loose control BIG TROUBLE!

Drive slow and unlikely to lose control and if you do the results are not so devastating . proven fact lol come on Rodger man you cannot be serious.

I was under the impression that this was an experiment over a two year timeframe.

We have areas with an 80kph restriction near where we live and I expect to see more when I travel but, at the moment, it is not across all of France.

Yes it is a 2 year experiment that starts for the whole of France on 01 July 2018. It is supposed to apply only to 'secondary' roads. Will have to see what roads they will class as secondary.
