"There are a lot of British Caravans in storage in cap ,We took 1 over 5years ago still there, Towergate was the only company that We could find that would insure a British Van stored in France for 365 days." same company we used when we first started. Have you read your policy? Particulary sections on security and also regarding fit for purpose - gas checks/servicing! Often companies insist on annual servicing and gas testing - all in policy wording. For example should a claim arise as a result of lack of servicing they will not pay out on grounds of the owner not being responsible - especially gas and various regulations around gas -e.g. age of gas piping from the bottle to the van.

Our new van is serviced every year and security is always fitted Inc tracker, but if you have an older van then it shouldn't cost much for a gas check every year.

" then you have nothing to worry about! However have you complied with French law? If it is permanently left in France it should be French registered?

"Yes but what is the likelihood of it being found ,loads of British van now in France not registered,it's a farce .like a lot of French laws , can't be police's." probably nil, but just because lots of other people chose to break the law doesn't mean it's right. How would you feel if lots of foreigners came to the UK and didn't follow the rules? You are more compliant than most by having your van serviced annually - the responsible thing to do, but a lot don't and are an accident waiting to happen. For example tyres have to be changed every 5 years. Gas tubing also every 5 years. It is probably only going to come to light in the event of a claim - and especially if someone is hurt or property damaged. What I tried to highlight was it's not just buying a caravan, but the responsibility to not only yourself but to others. As said it's ok until something goes wrong!

"I can now confirm that a British caravan which is insured by a British insurance company is Not insured when being towed by a French vehicle. Storage company have a commercial insurance policy but that doesn't include road cover. The vehicles in the business are insured separately and that policy has limited towing cover for small trailers. The company whom I use was unaware that British caravan insurance didn't cover the vehicle whilst in tow. Axa was the company whom provided this information. " So you are saying the caravan owners are not insured and the tow company as well ?

"Sounds like having a caravan here is a no go then because a service cost out weigh the savings to be made and the gardienage company's towing vans are not insured . Tires only last 5 years.rats might eat the seats . The site is full of mozzies so watch out you will be eaten alive . We'll all have to rent an appartment. I wonder who rents them ?" further to the reference of apartment rentals - yes we do rent apartments - legally and fully compliant -but don't rely on Brits. Out of 83 rentals only 8 were British! The information provided was just to highlight The responsibility of owning a caravan and it's legal implications. Also with regards to a previous remark about importing a vehicle being a stupid French rule - the same rule applies in the UK and the British police are seizing foreign vehicles who don't comply.

"The original post was asking if a caravan was for sale. Simple as that. I'm sure most people can arrange insurance or decide to use a fully insured towing service. You post negative comments regularly e. g. Bites in campsite . When was your last stay in the site ? Second thoughts don't bother replying . I have a life ." May & June & August to be precise. Warning people to bring insect repellent isn't negative but a fact of nature - creatures live in these places and bite! The post was about buying a caravan but my comments were about the consequences and responsibilities of buying a caravan. Buying a van is easy but be aware of what potential pitfalls there are. Simple as that! I only post on basis of experience - hopefully it will help people from making the same mistakes! End of story.
