Noticed that there's no French gcse courses available at night school, apparently colleges don't get funded for this. Gutted! Anyone know where in the Midlands this is available? A long shot but worth a try.

Plenty of courses available from specialist language company's. When we were in UK we did a course at local college - several entry-level options. It is a difficult language but worth persevering with. Bonne chance.

Portsmouth, North Brittany, France

I know that there are OCN courses run at night schools / colleges (herindoors did her basic French at one), just need to search in your area. Don't get too fussed about the masculine and femine bit, we've had French people arguing over certain words...! Bon courage!

Thanks guys. Will look for a basic course and get a revision book, might book an external gcse exam too to get on an A level course. Lots of self learning it seems.

I am learning French at the Institut-francais in West Kensington London .

I was fortunate that the night classes at a local college were cancelled and as such went to the Institut - francais . The advantage is that this organisation specialises only in French and has a wide selection of courses including both day and evening.

Whilst this organisation is too far away for you , they do offer a variety of on line courses and you could of course consider the Saturday courses .

Good luck in your search .Learning french is a long hard slog .

For manuals maybe try. hachette.fr. The two cost £30 and you can also download unto your laptop.

There are at least two French teachers on fab . I meet them in Cap d Agde

What I want is to meet the guy who decided on the gender of thing's and ask what logical methodology he used lol. German is the same so guess it's just get on with it. I also have difficulty understanding some accents. Learning the language means you get far more enjoyable experience from the country.

I tried just learning from books by myself.

However it is difficult to motivate yourself and having a class structure or work programme gives you targets to achieve .

Most of those attending my classes are already multi lingual and English is not their first language.

Students are learning for different reasons . One is married to a French lady and another is engaged to a French man and will be having her wedding in France in the summer.

You're right. We're able to start a beginner course without qualifications for 10 weeks, will give it a go for sure. Absolutely no idea how far this will take us on our pursuit of getting on to an A level course, nevertheless a starting place it seems.

Try contacting The Alliance Française de Londres, to see if the run any courses in your area? Birmingham perhaps?

I went to evening classes at The Glasgow branch of L'Alliance and it was superb!, the teachers very seldom spoke English so you really were immersed into the language.

Bon courage!

that can be useful, but you can't use colloquialisms as It often mis translates. You have to use "Queens English " to get a true translation. Also a lot of the time the meaning is often dependent on the context in which it is used. Bon courage.

I've been learning French now from 18 months and I'm nearly fluent. I can honestly say that intensive courses are the way forward ! I recommend alliance française (although not the London branch , it's a bit disorganised ) alliance française is a private school and has years of experience teaching the langauge . Any questions feel free to ask me !

That is good going to become fluent in less than 18 months .

How much French did you know before and when you say intensive , were the courses during the day or in the evenings , and for how long. ?

we found it ok you can check that what you said is correct i.e. Queens English before the translation also its dictated back with French without local accents. We only need to know holiday French basic as can be . Most 6 year olds can be understood even if we have to work it out a bit to understand . We have east European friends they all say spending time with people from the U.K. All day will get you basic English in 6 months.

No point learning French post-Brexit - the UK is now global outward looking but only to the rest of the world - so learn anything - except a European language!

Just kidding in case anyone takes this comment seriously.

Alliance Française is very good if you can find a course.

To " get by" you need to achieve level A2 in the European language scales.

Level B1 or B2 gets you to the point where you can have reasonable conversations, express opinions etc.

You will know when you are getting competent in a language when you stop translating from English in your head, and start " thinking" in the language.

To get hood, you really need that " live conversation" element

It's also worth seeing if you can get a couple of French TV channels on the TV (e.g. France 24, which broadcasts in English and French, ) watching the news in French is useful as you probably already know the subjects, so you can relate the words to the pictures.

There is also a good channel which you can get online: "ARTE" which is a collaboration between France, Germany and the BBC and which has some great documentaries; again watching documentaries is good as you can learn by watching the picture which gives the sense of the subject and you can relate the words to it.

An interesting and informative post . I have just paid for another set of 15 lessons at Institut Francais in Kensington . ( I have had three sets already )

Is France 24 a paid for service or is it available free ?

Does anyone know as I would like to start watching it .

If you have freeview you can get it on the news channels,I go to the South of France quite often and soon picked it up by talking to locals.I found if you at least tried to speak the lingo they are willing to help.It is when you don't try they turn a deaf one,it is amazing what comes back to you from school years
