I meet many people (in the vanilla world!) who go most years to France for their holidays. Some good for the food, others the wine, others still the culture or the weather. Apart from swinging, what takes you back?

We find the French as welcoming as any nation. This year and last year we’ve driven to Cap via Northern Spain and Southern France dropping into many beautiful historic towns and learning and seeing new things (also gives us some photos can CAN show family and friends). So for us it’s the food, scenery, culture, weather and history. The we get to Cap - then it’s a whole other set of reasons.

Just love the smelly toilets, the officious receptionists in Doctors surgery’s, the till lady’s in supermarkets asking to check your bags cause they think you’re a thief, the endless bureaucracy, signing a dozen bits of paper just to buy a toaster, the income tax returns, all the tradesmen trying to rip you off cause you’re not French

Could go on and on, other than cheap wine and sunshine there’s not a lot to recommend France.

The UK has a lot of benefits other than all the moaning Brits.

As for me I’m stuck here, French wife and kids, making the best of it but the grass isn’t always greener……

WE go back every year with our touring caravan since retiring for 11 weeks. Making our way down to Serignan Plage naturist campsite over a couple of weeks, staying there for three weeks and returning back up the Atlantic coast staying at various naturist campsites including Petit Dauphin and La Petit Cretoufier.

Love driving over there, do not get the annoyed people queuing up behind you whilst towing (unlike over here!)

We find that greeting anyone we deal with in French, Bonjour and Ca-Va go a long way and finishing with Au revoir or Bon Journee also helps because you are making the effort and being polite.

Supermarket checkouts looking into your bag also applies to the French, we don't mind.

Fuel slightly more expensive and food also, but using local markets does keep the costs down.

Just in case anyone is curious, we keep track of our costs and the holiday generally costs less than £5,500 all in.

We will recommend France whole heartedly and will keep going back.

I drive through France regularly. I'm always embarrassed but the cleanliness of the place, the pride people have in their country. England is a shit tip, people littering everywhere and fly tipping around every corner, it's very sad. Shall be down in Cap for a week in September if you fancy a beer and a good old fashioned British whine 🤣

What’s not to love about France…It’s peaceful, the people is are so friendly, driving is a pleasure compared to the UK, campsites are far cheaper, cleaner and more accessible. Most villages have an air, and camper vans are welcome rather than discouraged like the UK. We are currently sat naked, drinking a cold beer in the sun surrounded by chickens and sheep… what’s not to like

Lower Normandy

We toured Normandy and Brittany in our motorhome most summers for the last 16 years and Skiied in the Alps every winter.

Then decided to look for a place to buy for our retirement.

Roads are great , no traffic jams unless you venture into the cities at rush hour . No litter and every village has public loos , an aire de camping car and flower beds blooming with colour. We have been here nearly 2 years and cope very well with the French bureaucracy. And now survived the 40C + heat wave. The property we bought would be way out of our price range in the UK.

There is amazing wildlife in our fields, Red Squirrels ( not seen any Greys) Deer , wild boar , Hawks , Bat's, finches , Cranes toads the list goes on .Best bit is naked sunbathing without nosey neighbours lol

For me the question is why didn’t you leave France ? I arrived in the year 2000 to install a production line in a factory in La Rochelle and ended up staying. I became French in 2015 and married Emmanuelle my French wife 8 years ago.

I stayed because of the swinging – there are clubs everywhere here, much better than the ones at Cap. There are several Fab type sites and loads of private parties. Another reason for staying is 10 weeks a year paid holiday and retirement at 64.. Bisous !
