Hey all,

We are based in Ireland and planning a trip to visit Mont Saint Michel later in the year.

(No kiddies 🤩)

Will be a road trip (Ferry/Car) for around 5 days, probably in August.

Would appreciate any feedback or tips about visiting the area.

Thanks in advance 🥰

T&F xx

You will love Mont St Michel

Wear good shoes ,it's a fair walk to the top .it's France's 2nd most tourist destination and gets busy in August as the French have most of August off . So go early or late ,evening sun pics at dusk are great.St Malo and Cancale are worth a visit .

Thank you so much for the response,

We are planning on staying two nights on MSM, and then explore around for a few days.

We really appreciate your input

🥰

Mont St Michel is lovely. If you want to do something different you can park up in Genets and then take a guided walk across the bay to MSM have a couple of hours exploring and then they bus you back to the car park. Well worth doing but don’t try the walk on your own as there are lots of pockets of quicksand!

Double check the hotel you choose gives you access to the car parking.

Pre-book your Abbeye tour.

09h00 in the morning or at least before 11h when the day trippers arrive from Paris (via TGV from Rennes-you'll think you've been transported to China!)

Personally we would visit the Abbeye during the 'Son et Lumière'in the evening. Much quieter and atmospheric, harps playing etc. Again pre-booking is essential.

Oh thanks for that!

We saw there are guided tours around the area too, we’ll jump on something like that, wouldn’t want to get stuck in the sand 😱

Yes, we checked with the island accom and all have access to the carpark (with a fee).

Since we’re planning on a 2 night stopover we’ll definitely look into the evening visit to the Abbey, sounds phenomenal 🤩🥰

It’s been on our bucket list for so long!

We were thinking of incorporating it into another visit to Paris but thought our time would be better spent in experiencing the local area in and around MSM.

Paris isn’t going anywhere (there’s always a next time), but this will be special 🤩

Westmeath The West.

My tip wpuod be to get there early before 9am and get the bus. It's a long walk to the front gate from the carpark, and there is a lot of walking once you get inside. But walking around inside is really nice.

It's a beautiful place to visit!

So looking forward to it all, but because of the ferry times we won’t be there until late afternoon, but we’re planning on 2 nights on MSM.

Then a a couple of days travelling around 🥰

The plan is to stay at least one night there, looking forward to visiting the Abbey in the evening, should be a lot quieter then 🤩

Between Pontoson and Mt Saint M

There is a village Bouvoir. There is a big Motorhome park there. Also near the race track there is an Air where you can pay to part at the barrier

One should try and visit the place at least once. I did twice but that was enough.

Quite by chance, I grew up in one of the few properties in Jersey where the abbey could be seen from on a clear day, but only at low tide because the distance was so great that the horizon was critical. Binoculars or telescope essential, of course.

A very magic, mystic, romantic place.

Stay there for a while, seeing the sea moving as fast as a racing horse flooding the sand and making Mont St Michel in minutes is one to be experienced.

Treat yourself to an omelette at the Mere Poulard auberge.

Have sex as often as you can, fresh sea air is most erotic stimulant

I first visited Mont Saint Michel in 1956 with my parents and subsequently on various occasions until France joined the Euro and I had no more Francs left to spend on famous omelettes. In fact, I used up my remaining Francs on Chausey a comparatively little known archipelago in the same area.

Mère Poulard must have died very wealthy as visiting her restaurant was/is still almost as obligatory as climbing up the many steps to the abbey.

Her descendents must be grateful for such a heritage.

I dare say that there could be similar eateries in Paris but I have managed to avoid them, thankfully!

Anyone who spends €39 on an omelette has more money than sense!

We’re aware of the accom prices, but to eat? Is it that expensive?

There are other restaurants that aren't so extortionate, as you're not paying for the name. Although you do pay a premium to eat on le Mont.

Over the causeway back towards the carpark there are a number of better priced restaurants, although you're not actually eating on the Mont and would take away from your experience if you're spending the night there.

We might have to rethink our plan with regards to staying too long on the Mont 🤯
