Cork/Dublin

It's a very beautiful town. As you would expect from the French... Lol

Its been a long time but memory tells me the three towers tour is a lovely morning well spent. There is great food and bars everywhere. You'll find your way.

Ile de Ré (Island near by) is

Gorgeous. Drive to it by bridge. Park up and rent a bike. The island is one large sand Bank with cycling the norm. Saint Martin the island capital has a beautiful square and dining. People watching in the evening with a glass of something cold. Enjoy.

If you have some wheels, the town of Cognac is well worth a visit !!

If you have some wheels, the town of Cognac is well worth a visit just a short drive away!

I wasn't intending on hiring a car because I'd have to be the driver and then I can't sample any of the lovely wine....or Cognac!

I agree Cognac is very pretty also Jarnac is very close too. I think a little nicer than Cognac. And not far from me!

La Rochelle: since you won't be hiring a car I guess you are flying in. The town has a great network of bikes to hire; you can take boat trips around the harbour (there's a water taxi) or out to Fort Boyard etc. There's a reasonable train service so you could (if you were adventurous) get a train to Bordeaux or Nantes, both great cities, esp Bordux!

You can get the train, a short trip, to Saintes - great eateries/cafes; and old Roman town with narrow streets VG shops; on the river there is a Triumphal Arch, and a short walk from the centre there is France's largest Roman Amphitheatre.

Ile de Re is one of France's prettiest islands and there is a bus service from La Rochelle.

La Rochelle itself has Europe's largest marina (millions of £ worth of sailing boats); one of Europe's leading aquariums; lots of walks along the front; museums; again lots of great shops, old streets and great eateries/cafes etc. Enjoy

I live an hour from LaR and never get tired of visiting.
