Le Cap Observations from an oap

Well after 18 years ownership of a very nice apartment in Port Ambonne overlooking the port and Melrose we decided to sell up at the end of the 2022 season take a back seat and quit Fab.

The trouble is Cap D’Agde and Fab is a bit like Hotel California so the alternative to the apartment was bringing the camper and joining the peasants in Oltra Camping.

Well after all these years we should have done it earlier we can actually get a good nights sleep here!!

The only DIY is personal ????

As you can tell age is obviously catching up but it also does seem like the Pink Pound/Euro/Dollar is increasing its influence.

End of June and it’s definitely quieter during the week than previous years ( ex agent confirmed that observation)

We’ve been into Cap quite a bit in the last month or two.

It’s certainly not deserted, but by Cap standards it’s not far off..!

And not just Cap, everywhere is the same and nobody really knows why.

Obviously the weather has been pretty miserable at times (still getting regular thunderstorms) but that doesn’t explain the low bookings.

Let’s hope July and August picks up the pace.

We’re just back after doing our first trip last Thursday to Monday and got to say we loved it , we’re regular visitors to Gran Canaria but this is our new favourite place , were probably going to come back end of august again for 4 days . Only thing we found was compared to Gran Canaria it’s very expensive to drink / eat and get into clubs but I suppose it’s down to being open just seasonally , we will deffo be back next June around same time also was busy enough for us

Think that’s a fair comparison.

It’s really a two month season here and they have to make their money in just a few weeks.

GC is great fun and we probably prefer it for the slower pace.

Yip it’s definitely a slower place and a little more reserved to say the least haha , we love the vibe in both cap is far more full on, especially at night in Melrose etc we only tried 1 club and the sauna in cap which was decent but we prefer gc clubs so far , saying that we will deffo be back hopefully this year before our gc visit but if not 100% next June around same time , it’s a place like nothing we’ve ever seen before

We're only on our second visit here, but both times we've had no problems sleeping and we're often in bed (our own one!) by 9:30.

So I think it very much depends where your apartment is. This time we're on the outside of Heliopolis.

I think CdA is a bit like Glastonbury - the secret is to do it your way, and ignore what anyone else tells you to do!

I’ve been going to the Naturiste village for nearly 40 years! So an OAP as well…

Now it seems to encourage more flakes, fakes and tourists - as in tourists that gawp and don’t participate in naturism. Take your bloody shorts off !

The Cap offers freedom, so please would people embrace that freedom.

I think the swingers should accept its nudest and respect that.

We’ve been going for 22 years and just got back. We have never seen so many clothed people there! No doubt you have seen more changes than us but to us it doesn’t seem quite the same anymore. We still enjoyed it immensely and maybe it’s just because we ourselves are now part of the older crowd. But, for example we were walking along towards the beach from Port Nature one day and we heard 2 couples chatting (English) about their astonishment that someone was dancing naked in a bar the night before. That used to be common place.

I suppose all things change though!

We've been staying at Cap for around 25 years. It has certainly changed into a 'clothing optional' resort in that time. Most men and women now wear a short skirt as a matter of course during the day.

It wasn't that long ago there were signs all around the village saying 'Nudité Obligatoire'. It didn't make reference to the weather either...!

The swinging world now outnumbers the naturists in the village so it's probably a natural progression.

On the comment about the place being deserted, we've noticed a huge difference between this week and the previous one, so maybe it's just a bit slow this year.

And yes, fully nude people are in the minority in the village...

People on the beach used to shout and boo at clothed people walking along! I also remember police on horseback charging at the swingers, that quite a sight to see.

I see more LGBT couples now, so maybe they will balance things out a little.

Wow. That's really sad to hear. Not been since COVID but were thinking about a visit in September, but if it's a lot quieter and more clothes then may ruin it for us

When there we are normally naturist only with the odd meet - never into the big clubs. Though did enjoy the original foam parties.

GC on our agenda but not doable in the campervan lol

Anywhere else to consider?

Just had a few nice days at French naturist sites. No other Brits.

The rot has been setting in for years - the naturism was a huge factor for us but with each year, Cap is turning into a textile resort. And as such, no longer justifiable at the premium we pay to visit.

Such a shame

Totally agree ! When we first started going 20 years ago it had a completely different feel.

We visited Cap last year and didn't enjoy it as much as previous years. Not there this year, but will give it another go next year, which will probably be our last year unless it is much improved.

Haha, it’s as busy as ever, always quieter in May and June, currently packed on beach and village, will ramp up again from 10 July.

99.5% naked just some weirdo’s in shorts or bikinis. Have a great time and enjoy the freedom!

We were there a couple of weeks ago. Whilst the weather was good, it did seem a little quieter than normal eg Friday night we didn't have to queue to get into Ghymnos. It was still packed mind.

More surprising was how few people were there that we recognised - we counted about 10. Previous years at same time - around 50 or so.

There didn't seem to be a lot of people milling around outside the clubs, so got the impression they would be quiet, although we noticed even before the pandemic that numbers of people playing in clubs was declining too.

There was certainly a lot of naked people on all parts of the beach (although it has been a growing trend of more people wearing swimming costumes on the beach - still a small handful though) and on the campsite. The beach is still the best naturist beach in that area.

We split our time between serignan nature and cap now. If we could only choose one, we're still undecided which would win.

We'll be back at Cap next year, but don't foresee a time when we'd be back visiting 3/4 times a year again.

We’ve just come back. Other than Covid we have gone every year since 2000 and it most definitely isn’t as busy as ever! You can tell by the number of shutters down on the apartments, The lack of queues for the bakery in the morning and the beach certainly isn’t as busy as it previously has been.

We’re not expert enough to say 99.5% of people are naked and not sure how you would measure that without counting everyone there but in our opinion there are more and more textiles at Cap- and that definitely isn’t a good thing.

Guys- you have to take into account this is not unique to the village! Footfall is down all around Cap. All year round restaurants outside of village haven’t opened until June- bars are down 50%- year on year and the whole of Cap was quiet during June. People are reigning in their spend at the moment and the village is no different!

The village is hugely different - people pay a premium to holiday there and if it’s not worth that premium it’ll wither and die. People’s potential to spend money impacts disproportionately on the village as the prices are so artificially inflated

Just finishing our third visit to Cap in 3 years and not happy as found much more smoking taking place in public places.

Is tbe law not being enforced out of fear of losing visitors?

Did you find any places that did enforce no smoking as must admit we are not fans of the smell either so would rather not be inside surrounded by smoke if we had options?

What do you mean by "public places"?

It has always been possible to smoke in outside areas at Cap, even if they are covered, but no smoking inside has always been enforced. For example, you can smoke at the poolside tables in Waiki, but not at all in the glazed part. You can smoke in Mississippi because it is completely open (the roof is just shading) but not at all in Gymnos because it is completely enclosed.

That said, smoking rates in Cap do seem particularly high (because France) so it is bound to be a problem for some, particularly visitors from US and UK where rates and social acceptance are much lower.

In France, the law is often seen as advice only. An option. If it’s an inconvenience to you, just ignore it.

That applies to everything from paying taxes to adhering to speed limits.

It took years for any bar in Cap to even remotely follow the law. Now it’s an excuse to get people to stay in the bar rather than smoke outside when they might not come back.

We were sat in a beach bar in Marseillan Plage about 3-4 weeks ago. Saturday evening 7pm.

We were the only people there with 30-40 empty seats. Got chatting to the boss about the lack of customers and he was worried. Very worried. All the commerces there were expecting a quiet start to the summer but nothing like that.

Things will certainly pick up from this weekend but it’s possible that locals who would visit several times a year are saving for just one holiday.

Who knows for sure, but money is certainly tight this year.
