Found my car insurance last year never covered repairs in France! it only offered repaitrated for repairs to be conducted in the UK. No replacement vechile outside UK.

Does anyone know of UK insurers that offer repairs in the European country you are actually are in?

And cover you for trips of 180 without having to return to Uk to restart cover? Replacement vechile whilst repair takes place?

Or can recomend a car insurance broker who specialises in European longer stay

Clients.

My british insurance required a special extra to cover in Europe after brexit. Officially, it can only work for up to six month. But you can get a french insurance to cover your car in France too. It is fine for few months, but if longer you will need to register your car in France. It may be cheaper to buy a french car and leave it in France or to rent if short term.

Cheers for the insight we aim to stay for six months on a visa so although we may return for a couple of 3 days just to check on family. We prefer to be covered for repair in the country of breakdow and accident.

If you have information on ghe french insurer thatll maybe of interest.

There is a Facebook group for Registering a U.K. car in France that you should join and read their files.

You may find a French Insurer who will cover you but it may prove difficult to claim in the event of an accident, but they will take your money

I think you are better to look at Brokers in the U.K. who specialise in non usual insurance. Google it there are one or two who do but of course it may cost you more.

Try saga, I think you can be out of the country for as long as you like..not sure about repairing in France. I eventually imported my car and insured in France ..best of luck

Quite a few companies offer long-term EU cover, but I don’t know of ANY insurance company that would allow repair outside the UK, other than windscreen. They’ve no control over the costs, and how will their appointed “Expert” assess the damage? Earlier this year my son’s Gold Wing was rear-ended on a motorway down here (thanks Mr Honda, the air-bag saved his life and he walked away with a few bruises and scratches), although AXA eventually made a reasonable payout for the bike - after a LOT of hassle to prove a realistic market value - they wouldn’t entertain any claim for his destroyed helmet, leathers, SatNav and ‘phone etc. that were destroyed, nowithstanding the fact that the car driver was texting and has been charged with dangerous driving.

And the wreckage was collected from the Police compound only to be returned to the UK for the bike to be written off.

Accept that in case of accident a UK-insured vehicle will only be repaired in the UK. And that the legal expenses supplement isn’t perhaps such a waste of money…

Sterling insurance specialise in insuring British cars in France and will cover you up to 12 months….was too much hassle to take a British car to France so we have bought/registered and insured with AXA a French car to use at our apt in the alps.

All in all, probably the best way. We have a friend who frequently flies to and from Béziers and leaves his car on a long-term contract at the airport.

We ourselves have re-registered one of our cars in France (not too much hassle, but insurance is twice what it used to cost in the UK) and it now stays here permanently.
