we have booked cap dagde via airbnb- the host has asked for a deposit cheque of 1000 euro when we arrive- is this normal or am l just being too cautous

"Cautions" are normal in France. I checked. It's lawful and up to the landlord as long as it's written in the contract. I hope you did a careful check of the property with the landlord,it will be used to give you your money back.

Wow €1000 seems excessive, we only charge €300
