Living in South of France

This is being written while under curfew from the campsite. When we left on 15 October 2020, we could at least have a drink in a bar (La Pilouterie), followed by a meal at a restaurant (Pizza Flora). 5 Months on France has managed to close all bars and restaurants, apart from takeaways. When they can reopen, no idea. Further updates await.

If you can get here, and still have your entrance card from 2020, then bring it with you. Apparently it still works as they have no new ones. Quote... Come back on Thursday, or Friday, or Monday. Do you have your card from last year? Answer.... Yes, but it is 3 hours drive to get it, so, No. Camping reception recommended waving the wristband at the man in the cabin by the barrier. After a trip to the shops outside......Man in cabin....You need your card from last year..... Merde!

Just been into the cap this morning. Last years pass is good until end of March. Possible that 2 restaurants will open in June and again possibly a few bars. But definitely no dancing or music. Fingers crossed things improve but nearly 30000 new cases of Covid yesterday is not good news ??

Bergerac, France

Thanks.

It's somewhat bizarre thinking, even by French standards.

On the one hand we have campsites opening to all and on the other hand Macron is talking about more severe restrictions and curfews coming back.

Obviously we all want some return to normality asap in Cap and everywhere else.

But with cases increasing at the rate they are it's a gamble, especially when you take into account the reluctance of French nationals to accept the vaccination.

Let's hope it pays off and things move forward.

We'll be back home soon, but it's with a degree of trepidation...

Afternoon walk complete, and defrosting. You can get a haircut, buy some skimpy garments and admire Pilouteriés new stone flooring in Port Ambonne. You can use the laundrette in Hélio, and work out that Spar and the Bakery close at 1PM. You can admire the nearly complete new wooden boardwalk at the sea end of Port Nature, including steps to get you from Ô2Bizoux terrace down to the main bar. Errr, and that’s about it.

This forum is purely for Village Naturiste, in Le Cap d’Agde in Region 34, in the Hérault. If people wish to discuss curfew timings in the 16 regions, as outlined by the French PM just now, then please go elsewhere and create your own forum. Thank you.

This is a thread which to be found in the French forum which is a open and public forum to which any one and their grandmother can reply to a post if the fancy takes them.

The shops at the entrance to the campsite are not yet open. But there is a large hole where Monsieur Jo, the Pizza Man was. His premises and refrigeration have been removed. A new tarmac surface has been laid. There is apparently a new Pizza Takeaway with an Italian Twist on its way.

So, can you get a takeaway Pizza within the Village? The short answer is no, not yet. Gymnos will be opening for business on Friday 2 April between 11.45 and 13.45 for takeaway pizza only! Some small progress then.

Cap d’Agde, France

Six years after first hearing about it, they are just completing part of a new promenade.

From Calypso to Horizon bar, including Mississippi and O2Bizous they have installed a permanent decking of hard wood (possibly Teak) levelling out both of the restaurants with the frontage with steps leading down into the O2Bizous main bar.

Furthermore they have provided wheelchair access to all terraces via the rear parking area.

No expense spared, an excellent job.

Keen to see it finished.

Would never have expected that.

We occasionally used the Tennis hotel directly behind it.

It was quite handy for an extra night or two if we arrived early.

Hope the hotel is still there.

It’s been raining all day, so a brief update on shopping around the campsite. Le Croc has been open since last Saturday, with limited hours. No alcohol, no tables, until at least 26th April. So basic staples only. The main effort has been around the main entrance. The old exercise area for step classes etc has been removed. In its place is what looks like a food court, with a disabled ramp, and four huge umbrellas. Starting at the reception side, the old seafood stall, and the fruit and veg stall still survive. Mr Jo Pizza stall, which has gone, has now been tarmaced to blend in. There are now two new huts above the fruit and veg, and at a 90 degree angle from them, last years charcuterie stall has been dragged back. There is room on the other side for another stall, and the electrics are installed. Will keep you updated.

Latest update on the ´Food Court’. Another two umbrellas have gone in. The Shellfish stall is due to open on May 1st, along with the Fruit and Veg. As both of those are essential, can’t see Macron and Castex stopping that. There is then the brand new food truck opening sometime in May, serving dishes, drinks and breakfasts. ( I’m using the newsletter, and it’s a bit light on menu items). Also, Pizzeria La Spezia will open sometime in May, serving real Italian Pizza. ( No, I don’t know how you make it in France and call it Italian either). Finally, Soo Sushi, will serve Poke Bowls, Fresh Sushi and drinks. Opening day not announced, and there are search engines available for any food concepts that we also failed to understand

Time for another stroll. All three beach bars are being built. Mississippi and Calypso are preparing to re open, when allowed. The new steps down to Ô2Bizoux are blinking dangerous as the dark wood blends in from one step to the other. Gymnos takeaway service for Pizza and Salad has added on a second session from 4.30 to 7.00. Spar is now open all day, along with the nice bakery in Hélio. The Swallow nest on top of the security light by Hot and Tasty is still there, but no inhabitants seen. All skimpy clothing shops are now shut as non essential. The 2 newsagents shops are open, but things like flip flops and hats are sealed off as non essential. Life is slowly being restored.

Cap always opens up piecemeal. It doesn't have a 'Grand Opening' date.

National restrictions prevent clubs opening along with restaurants and bars.

The campsite is open and other establishments will follow when permitted.

Macron says he wants things to open up by mid May, but the general feeling here is that it's very unlikely to change much by then, given the virus stats.

Bars and restaurants will be opening for sure, but clubs are a different thing entirely.

August would be a better bet if you want to see Cap in anything like its usual self.

The France forum is a good guide to numbers attending Cap and as you can see, there's very little being said.

At this time of year there's normally dozens of posts about meeting up with other folk.

We hope we're wrong and things pick up quicker than we think.

Ahead of Le Macron announcement tomorrow, this is the rumoured opening dates from Europe 1.

May 19: Curfew moves from 19:00 to 21:00. Shops, museums, cinemas, terraces, outdoor sports venues can reopen. Gatherings of more than ten people are prohibited.

June 9: Curfew extended to 23:00. Cafes and restaurants can reopen inside with tables of up to six people.

June 30: Curfew comes to an end.

Tomorrow he will have closed all bars and restaurants for 6 months. Just saying.

In other good news, the 2 Swallows have returned to the nest on the security light by Hot and Tasty. There are another pair that have built a nest on a light fitting in the corridor outside Melrose. Not certain this is the best position to bring up fledglings, but maybe last year has brought a false sense of security to the avian world.

Melrose are building a small outside terrace area.

British tourists with a vaccine certificate will be able to visit France from 9 June, according to a leaked document.

France's roadmap for exiting lockdown has been leaked to the French press, ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's official announcement, which is due this evening.

According to the plan, from 9 June British and foreign tourists with a "health pass" - either a vaccine certificate or a negative PRC test - will be able to visit the country. - Sky News today

That's good news - I also read that but, what is the UK government's stance going to be for French (or UK tourists from France) visiting (or getting back to) the UK?

... and will the UK accept the EU vaccine passport?

I think France will support the idea of vaccine passports, but not sure that French citizens will be behind it.

They have an inbuilt mistrust of all things governmental and are not afraid to demonstrate strongly against proposals they don't like.

Vaccine passports are one way to gain access to places and services. When the tourist world begins to realise that's how governments will regulate travel, vaccines will suddenly become more popular.

Will they come about...?

Who knows, but it's looking more and more likely.

We were going to do a post about who might be able to open as a terrace on 19th May. ( Why a Wednesday, no idea). But, as we have wandered round Le Village, and only a few bars and restaurants are looking to open, we have a theory. When Macron shut the bars, restaurants, and non essential shops down at the end of October 2020, he stated that if he forced you to close, you would be given either €10K, or 20% of your declared 2019 turnover, whichever was the greater. Our bar up the mountain has told us that this has been his best ever year, as takeaways, and his school dinner service don’t count.

So, apparently all the bars and restaurants in Le Village have been eligible to this as well. Disregard the fact that they don’t open over the winter, they could still claim the money, providing they submitted a tax return in 2019.

We can see some bars actively looking to open, but some are still on holiday. So, we will only update on those that are looking to open, if possible. Confused?

Think you've got it in one.

Our view of French tourist facilities in this area is that they have a target income for the year. Once they reach or exceed that by a little, it's job done. They close and head off home.

The weather can still be fantastic, tourists are still around, but they've got what they wanted and close their doors.

Your theory would also explain why some don't appear to be in any rush to open for this season.

I really think that Cap is going to be a shadow of its former self this year.

I think a large number won't open as the length of the season will be short and financial support extends to July

Also for the clubs/sauna its going to be another tough year.

We are going to use Terre de Soleil more this year, the restaurant is outdoors , the hot tub and pool too and even the play area is ! Also its transit and lunch offer is great value at €30 for 2 - sunloungers ,lunch and some wine !

Actually Terre de Soleil is 20km from the village and by car 30 minutes.

We will certainly be taking advantage this summer of the campsite.

Apart from the value for money aspect, it's couple only with none of those pesky Cap D'Agde meerkats plus only 10mins from our present residence.

It would be nice though to see a few more anglophones there.

"How do we think things are looking for end of July? "

What's your best guess?

Maybe it will be similar to last year, some parts open, restrictions, stop start etc.

The French death rate has taken three months to half and many hospitals are still under severe strain, but there are signs that the death rate is on the way down again after being stalled for a couple of months.

It's taken a month to roughly half the daily infection rates so maybe by the end of June it will be down to acceptable levels especially if the French get enough vaccinated but whether that will be enough to allow a proper opening is anyones guess.

It will probably go to the wire for end of July as they are a few weeks behind the UK in opening things up and we won't be properly open until late June (if all goes to plan).

Question for _owel couple ,

How strict is the curfew regarding movement around Rene Oltra, can you walk to other pitches around the site to see people, or are you really meant to stay banged up in your own unit?

Concerned that if it doesnt end on the 30th June as proposed, just how bad it would be late at night on site? Dont normally get back til 4am any other year! Thanks in advance

There is some movement. There has to be to go to the toilet. However, if you break the rules, and are discovered, then the site rules may well eject you. We will continue to monitor what happens after the next release point on 19th May, then 9th June.

Pretty strict then.worse than we'd hoped for.it's gonna be a tough call for us deciding whether to pull out and roll over yet another year with the ferry.or risk a very watered down Cap in early July, if France makes the green list of course. It just so much fun, nothing comes close worth switching to instead so just got to hope things open up as planned and it's offers a bit of nightlife after a day in the sun.

Its worrying,Canaries seem confident of making the next selection for the green light around the 7th June but cant see France sorting itself by then.

The next batch for green is due around the 28th June (which is also the supposed curfew end day out there) thats a couple of days before our ferry so its all a bit stressy for those going early season, perhaps those going later in the summer will have it a bit easier, and will have more info on the state of the village music bars, clubs, saunas, etc hopefully from the very helpful contributors on this page!

Sitting down in Melrose at little tables is just the oddest thing imaginable but we'd still rather be in Cap than anywhere else if we're allowed

Today’s stroll was to see which bars and restaurants might be open from tomorrow, 19/5, even if it is only on a terrasse, at 50% capacity, with a 9pm curfew. These are the places that might be open, though the definition of a terrasse seems rather flexible in one or two cases. Starting in the centre of the campsite, Le Croq’Med, then down to the beach, Sun Beach, Paralia Beach Club from 21/5, Plage a Galion, and La Méridienne Plage. Port Nature Beach end featured Ô2Bizoux, Calypso, Baskin and Missisipi ( from 1/6). PN North featured Le Piment Vert andL’Arche II, with Melrose having built a small outdoor terrace but no sign of opening. Waiki is also a possibility. Port Ambonne has signs of life at Chez Maxime by the swimming pool, La Cave se Rebiffe, Le Comptoir du Port, L’Aile ou la Cuisse, Le Fournil de K&H, and Palmerie and Pilouterie. Port Venus has Joy’s and Maharani Sutra setting up. Finally, Hélio has Gymnos, L’Atelier, Hot n Spicy, L’Air Marin ( new fish restaurant), 1664, Bangkok and Les Jardins du 16.

If you have any further questions the OP will not be answering them tomorrow. After 6 months and 20 days of not being legally allowed in a French Bar or Restaurant, Zaphod and Trillian may well be too d*unk to care. Stay Safe!

Update from the campsite as Euro2020 starts. The normal TV Screen at the Agora has had to be scrapped as it has a roof. Instead, Le Croq, in the centre of the campsite has had a TV Screen installed, along with speakers, and all matches are on. As it is outside, at present it can operate at 100% capacity. All we need are some visitors!

" All we need are some visitors!"

Think that's a feeling echoed around France at the moment...!

Wandering around Marseillan today between games and it was very quiet.

A few Dutch (of course..!) and strangely enough, 5-6 cars and motorhomes from Luxembourg.

We even have some on the next pitch to us at Terre de Soleil.

Some good news!

France is lifting mandatory mask-wearing outdoors and will halt an eight-month nightly coronavirus curfew on June 20.

Prime Minister Jean Castex welcomed the “very good news” and said the requirement for people to wear masks outdoors in much of the country would be lifted from Thursday, with some exceptions, while the curfew will be lifted on Sunday, ten days earlier than expected.

Masks will still be required outdoors on public transport, in stadiums and other crowded places, the premier said.

I’m looking forward to security removing every one of the stupid mask pictures on the stanchions by tomorrow. May even help!

I believe that the Cap Saunas are open (comes under the 'Health club' rule) and apparently the Cap Cinema will open on July 1st, ideal if you want a cum bath, allegedly.

Not heard about any other clubs or dance bars.

Official wording of gouvernement.fr translated

This positive change in the health situation has led to the adaptation of certain restrictive measures:

• end of wearing a mask outdoors, with some exceptions (groups, queues, markets, stadiums, etc.). The prefectural decrees on the wearing of the mask will be modified from Thursday, June 17. Wearing a mask in closed environments remains compulsory (businesses, stores, transport, etc.)

• lifting of the curfew at 11:00 pm from Sunday, June 20;

• the gauges for public reception are maintained until June 30. Details of the new rules as of July 1 will be announced next week.

Small walk outside the campsite. Nobody is wearing a mask, but, Oltra have left all the masks compulsory signs up. We reckon that they don’t believe that Macron won’t bring the restrictions back. However, the local resistance army are making further inroads into ripping the signs down, and it’s not just us!

Posters have just gone up for VinoCap 2021. It will be on 13/14/15 July. €3 gets you a wine glass and tickets for 3 local wines from a choice of 70 stalls. In reality, hardly anyone ever asks for the vouchers, so fill your boots. Bus 4 goes from the entrance of Village Naturiste at a cost of €1 each way. The 14th is a national Holiday, so the bus won’t be running on that day. It’s not a massive walk anyway to the main harbour.

Not good news……

Foreign tourists visiting France will have to pay for Covid-19 tests starting July 7, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said in an interview published Wednesday.

Attal said the new measure was about "reciprocity" since French tourists are required to pay for their tests abroad.

“We have decided foreign tourists should pay for those tests, €49 for PCR tests and €29 for antigen tests," Attal told Les Echos newspaper, adding: "This is about reciprocity, as French people travelling abroad have to pay for those tests in most countries.”

Foreign tourists arriving from “red list” countries need to present a negative PCR or antigen test taken less than 48 hours before their departure for France and they are tested again upon arrival in France. Red list countries include Afghanistan, Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Paraguay, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname and Uruguay. On June 25, Namibia, Russia and the Seychelles were added to the list.

Vaccinated visitors from these countries must pledge to self-isolate for seven days, and unvaccinated visitors are also subject to a mandatory 10-day quarantine.

Hello. I was thinking of going in September as I have a few tasks to complete in my apartment. Flights are still cheap so I will take a risk and book them ( they may rocket in price once restrictions are lifted). I am not too bothered about the cost of the PCR test but are they quite easy to have done in the village ? I do not fancy joining a very long queue to have one which I think is a requirement for travel ( even if double vaccinated) . I am guessing that demand for tests will be quite high.

It's only fair... given the extortionate costs anyone coming from amber countries must pay to get tested on day 2 and 8, in addition to a 10-day quarantine, to come to the UK. And prices are not even comparable.

Unlike Gran Canaria 90% of Cap visitors are French and they do like to spend money on holiday.

Many French companies give their employees an extra months salary in July or August just for that purpose.

We’ve been offered dinners in the Cap where the bill for 4 has been over 400 euros so I don’t think that the shops and restaurants will suffer too much.

"At the moment if you have had two jabs, do you still have to isolate and is this going to change anytime soon. "

At the moment….

If you are vaccinated:

upon boarding, each traveller aged 11 years or older must present a negative PCR test taken less than 72 hours before the flight or a negative antigenic test taken less than 48 hours before the flight.

The measures regarding pressing grounds for travel and quarantine which are applicable to vaccinated adults also apply to any minors accompanying them, whether they are vaccinated or not.

If you are not vaccinated:

you can only travel to France if you have pressing grounds for travel. The list of pressing grounds is set out in the certificate of international travel drawn up by the Ministry of the Interior.

each traveller aged 11 years or older must present a negative PCR test taken less than 72 hours before departure or a negative antigenic test taken less than 48 hours before departure.

you may be subject to a random test when you arrive in France.

you must pledge to self-isolate for 7 days.

On return to the UK I have to have another PCR test to come home?"

Best to look on the Gov dot Wales site for full details but in short from there….

“Travellers arriving in Wales from an amber list country -

You will need to provide your journey and contact details by completing a passenger locator form.

You must have proof of a negative coronavirus test taken no more than 72 hours before departure (ie test in France). £500 fine for not having one.

Pre-booked a testing package for COVID-19 testing at Day 2 and Day 8 following your arrival back in Wales. Done via NHS Wales site at a cost of £170. £2k fine for not arranging it.

You will need to isolate for up to 10 days.”

These regulations assume transport direct to Wales and not transiting through England. As you will have filled in the passenger locator track and trace may well pick you up if you don’t comply. This is only my interpretation so I would urge you to check for yourself as things are constantly changing.

Hope this helps and sorry to hijack the thread. Nat

They were replacing the sign above the door yesterday.

I think it should be good for dancing though, gay bars usually are but in any case we always thought the playrooms were rubbish at Le Juls, far too dark!

Years ago Jules was great, but in recent years it was not so much fun. Won't shed any tears for it.

So, tonight is the first night after nearly 18 months that night clubs can open. The rules include capacity to be capped at 75% of normal, masks are recommended but not mandatory and clubbers will need to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid test, or a positive test in the last 6 months, to gain entry.

Glamour, according to their Face Page, are opening tonight. How long before they get closed by the Prefecture may be a different matter!

Good morning! The reopening of the clubs is great news! But will they accept our NHS vaccination letter? If the clubs scan our UK QR code from the NHS app on our phone or even the letter, we're afraid it won't show as valid on the French system and therefore the club will not let us in... that's our main concern right now. Any thought? Thank you

Until the politicos sort it out, probably not. You will need a tester sent over!

New Bus Route. There is a new bus route from Village Naturiste to Grau d’Agde. It is the Number 11. Seems to go via every holiday village. Will be checking it a bit more to see if it goes via Hyper U, or the Bio Med testing station for PCR Tests.

Admittedly the playrooms weren't the best (good for a little pot luck play and go though! )

We just liked the fun atmosphere in there.

We probably won't make it over there this year though, so maybe we can find a replacement go to club next year

About a 10 min walk from the bus stop, problem was getting back but thankfully a lively Irish couple gave us a lift. Taxis are a nonsense.

It may help your cause if you told people your plot number.

There is a testing station now within the village, by Glamour. It only does Antigen tests though, and appears to be a pop up operation. The attempt to charge a French Resident €20 was rebuffed. The rumoured testing centres inside the village by the Post Office and Waiki could not be found though.

We’ve been here a couple of days, no issues getting here with the correct documents. No tests required to enter the village which was a relief.

It all seems very normal, I would say 90% of bars restaurants are operating as normal which is great to see. We went to Melrose lastnight and although there wasn’t any podium dancing everyone was dancing and having a great time although it was less busy than normal and numbers may have been restricted. The beach clubs are full and the swingers beach was packed with plenty of fun happening. Karma Sutra for us tomorrow.

It really does seem much more normal than we were expecting, just getting ready for a club tonight so hopefully that’s all good. X

Noted that the other testing stations appear in the evening.

You will need your jab certificate, or a negative test within 48 hours, or an old positive test within the last 6 months, to get entry to any bar or restaurant, or club, as of Monday 9th August. Stand By for chaos!

No, flying down. We would have preferred to take the car but flights for us both were half the cost of driving !!

Two things on testing, now that the Health Pass has become compulsory. The first is that there is a PCR test station, just outside Le Village, next to the Post Office. It is open from 10 -1, the bad news is that you have to put clothes back on!

Second, there are a number of pop up Antigen Test Stations within the Village, but they want money, even for French Residents. Armed with our Resident Cards and Carte Vitale, we went to the pharmacy just above Intermarché, as no appointment was required. After a discussion that we don’t have Smartphones, we were registered on the Pharmacy System, nasally swabbed, and it is free. Results awaited

Near Bergerac

Thanks for that info.

We'll need PCR tests soon for our UK trip, at least I assume that's the type we'll need.

How much are PCR tests at the location you mention..?

We'll promise to wear clothes when we visit...

Thanks also, very useful, we arrive tomorrow just a short trip and will be looking to test for return on Thursday, prepared to go for the PCR if we have to but hoping the in village antigen test satisfies the quality requirements on gov.uk which accepts antigen to a specific standard
