Cambridge and Cap d Agde ( various weeks 2021 )

Probably not the most interesting of topics concerning Cap d Agde but as I know of at least four people who have required emergency / medical assistance in Cap , some visitors might want to take note for emergencies .

My visit was prompted by falling over in the afternoon . I picked up a brochure from a letting agent ( displayed outside their premises ) , started to read the brochure while walking and within a metre fell over a low level bollard which I did not see while looking at the brochure . I fell quite heavily on the ground and had put both hands out to cushion myself from the fall . As my right arm / wrist was painful when moved , I later decided that I would seek medical advice ( it seemed pointless seeing a Doctor as they would not have access to X ray equipment and would only refer me to the hospital anyway )

On Saturday night I heard a shout as I was walking past the Pilouterie bar . It was George and Louise so joined them for a drink . Louise probably has better knowledge than most people of hospitals in the area as her grand daughter had previously broken a leg and was able to give me a run down of the various hospitals and the procedure for obtaining treatment .

Monday morning saw me catch the number 4 bus to Agde and use street walker to locate the hospital . It turned to be the equivalent of an old peoples home . After walking about half an hour I arrived at what I believed to be the correct hospital but was surprised how quiet it was . I was unable to locate the entrance despite the fact that there were signs and a gate for accident and emergency ambulances . Eventually I asked someone on reception at what appeared to be another old peoples home next door and using google translate obtained the correct address . After about an hour ( including a stop for a cup of coffee and walking in the wrong direction on a few occasions - live real time instructions on a mobile phone are not always fool proof ) I arrived at the hospital and was directly to a waiting area outside for those without appointments . After two patients were called , I realized that the hospital did not have my name so checked if I was in the correct area . After another walk and asking a member of staff , I was advised that the registration area was beside the waiting area . Registration was a straight forward process . You just need your EHIC card ( mine had expired but was not queried , though I had applied for a new one ) , passport and medical insurance certificate . Copies were taken of all these documents .

I was seen by a Doctor who did various tests on my arm and wrist . After X rays were taken , the X ray operator was unsure as to whether there was a break or not . I was instructed back to the waiting area , the Doctor then asked a few further questions and concluded that there was no break ( the query on the xray related to a historic fracture ) . I was given copies of the X rays in a folder and left the hospital at 1 pm . I now had time to check the bus stops for transport back to Agde Gare

Overall I was very impressed with the standard of service and felt that the Doctor was thorough and attentive in her examination .

Hopefully no one needs to use this advice but if you do , the hospital has its own stop on bus routes 1 , 2 and 3 . ( going by bus is a lot easier than spending two hours walking trying to find it )

Hospitals and indeed doctors surgeries are great here but I’m sure they can be very daunting to a holiday maker.

Good to hear your visit went well.

Hmmm - doesn't sound entirely convincing as the doctor failed to prescribe you any suppositories.

Ascot

I broke my big toe staying at Jardin de Eden (dropped a 5kg parasol base on it and pretty much spliced it)..managed to style it out but was bloody painful..Walked to the local Dr..forget it unless you want paracetamol prescribed..Eden organised a taxi to the hospital (€20) and I was seen by an English speaking Dr within 10 minutes of arrival ..she was excellent. Obvs couldn’t fix me but she did stitch me up (medically) and prescribed pain killers. Cost £75 but could have claimed it back on insurance if I could have been bothered..took a taxi back (another €20) however there were loads of buses stopping outside but we didn’t want to miss the afternoon party ??

That was an excellent turnaround time at the hospital. Had Jardin de Eden booked you in or just booked a taxi? .
