May be very unpopular but I believe a token £1 credit card fee should apply to all new users. This would end the very many fake accounts both issuing pictures of others and perusing pictures of individuals that they have no right to see

There and to the left a bit

Or you could just filter "newbies" out of your search parameters and use a little common sense and due diligence to decide on how genuine a profile is - has worked for me for over three years and have never yet had my time wasted or even got sucked in by a fake profile.

A notional £1 charge to join wouldn't be enough of a deterrent to keep away the type of profile you're referring to anyway - from what I hear other sites that charge all users to join are just as full of people bemoaning fakes and timewasters as here.

The only real way to avoid them is to use your instincts and, as I said, a little common sense and due diligence.

Is not about being conned

It is about people illegally posting pictures of other people locally stolen from FB etc

A notional card charge would confirm if person is male or female.

Regardless of what it was about though a notional £1 charge still wouldn't deter people - and a credit card doesn't prove gender as far as I am aware - mine just shows my initials for example.

Agree that anyone using pics that aren't their own should be blocked and there's a report button to do so if there are any you are aware of and can show that they don't belong to the user.

Paying would of put me off joining. I don’t believe it would put the pic collectors off as they still don’t have to meet. Everyone is a fake to someone on here. Like crying wolf

I agree with the OP a nominal charge is a good idea.

It confirms someone's ID and allows their real details name ,dob, home etc to be accessed / identified in the event the member causes trouble on site or the police are involved for whatever reason etc. Also arguably someone with access to a credit card is going to be more stable/ honest perhaps ? Not saying anyone who can't get a credit card is going to be dodgy ..but I'm not saying some of them aren't dodgy though ! yes I do agree fully about a way to stop the false people in here ..let's be honest FAB is starting to become a bit of a free for all with all sorts adding profiles wanting to sell their used pants and seen to be involving everything from money to drugs or both for sex services . There are sites for that but the cheapskates won't pay the advertising fees I imagine !

Shouldn't we as paying members only be given information about ' real' people from this site ? And not have to work it out for ourselves ? I get the ethos of this place being a bit hippy ,free ,DIY of course but really think some things need dealing with.

Also, before anyone suggests it .I don't really agree with the ' block button' being the universal solution to everything anyone says they aren't happy about on FAB . I could argue that's not necessary if everyone was a bit more honest on here ?but as the OP implies things are getting a bit tiresome now with ' falsies, druggies and hawkers' time they were gone I say!

Actually you are right although I would suggest £100 would be more sensible . Members could get 2 months Gold pas included ? Plenty of time to check out the full site and see if it works for them

Members could see it as like a damage deposit ! Something they get back when they leave the site based on their behaviour etc whilst they were using it ..

Could work ! Sort out the idiots, timewasters and pretenders .

Perhaps ?

This has been covered so many times on the forums for years.

Timewasters still have money, people will still continue to mess each other about.

Like someone has said, set your filters, read profiles carefully and you may get on better.

Penilising everyone and charging them more wont work.

That just seems like a kop out answer . Just because a problem remains to exist doesn't mean you ignore it . For me this is becoming a real problem on fab it falsifies the statistics .How many actual women are on here for example .Something that would influence someone joining the site ? And strangely making the gender imbalance higher and higher for a lot of straight guys . Add To that junkies and panty sellers and the place starts to look a bit sordid .. just my opinion of course .

It's really not a cop out. I've been on other sites, sites where you have to pay, and there are far more fakes on them than fab because guess what? The site owners don't care, at the end of the day, fake or real, they're getting everyone's money, so they have no incentive to stop it. They are usually easy to spot for the most part, with a bit of common sense, report them here and at least they generally get removed.

The site has worked fine for us over the last 10 years.

Unfortunately the number of single men far outweigh the number of women and couples.

Most (not all) men are under the assumption that because it's a swinger site the chances of getting a shag are potentially high, however this is not the case.

So this in itself increases the demand for single women an couples.

These so called time wasters and fakes capitalise on this by creating profiles directly to entice men into parting with money or directing them into situations where drugs or solicitation are involved.

You will never stop the timewasters , many other sites have a yearly subscription which can be in the £100s of pounds and they still attract timewasters.

If they have good verifications from actually meeting people then more often you know your not wasting your time . Those who are new or have been on the site over a year with no verifications then use obvious caution .

Would be a waste of time as you can use pre-paid credit cards! With hacking becoming a big problem. The less personal details shared online, the better!!!

Not really a you have to do is refuse debit and pre paid cards .. proper ( if you like) credit cards would be issued and used by real people .

At least it would be a start !

I think you miss my point

So to clarify .

Let's say

There are lots of fake profiles on here and lots of single men pretending to be women or cples ?

Now think if the real single guy mulling over whether to join the site .

If the published stats are to be believed then he probably thinks it is worth his while and he joins the site .

On joining he finds .He can't see messages ,vids etc without paying for the orivelege . He does so . Then finds the truth about swinger sites for a single M is

90 percent or more of his messages are deleted or ignored without even a thank you .

If he does get a reply it could be soliciting ,dealing or the dreaded pantie seller ( also a guy no doubt)

Or

He is informed his pictures don't cut it or he is not ' gym fit' ..there are of course lots of similar reasons .

In despair he asks why and gets ' advice' on how to sell himself and further informed ' if you want to meet swingers go to a club'

He is very shy and doesn't much like clubs or crowds .

Q will he be renewing his membership ? Advising others to join?

Or probably feel worse than he did getting rejected all those years at school ..

All in all not what he was looking for or promised from the site info . So he leaves a bit upset but he will get over it eventually and what do you know ..another one joins to do exactly the same thing !and do the cycle and money machine starts again .

Seen it so often on here from so many angles . I have been here some time and lasted because I became a realist and not the usual optimist I am .

However , you can't blame guys for giving up .. it's worse odds than winning the lottery !

So perhaps a realistic reflection of actual real people not fakes , couples using 3 profiles or freebie girlies using a new profile every week ..it might be more fun for those of us who have the biggest challenge and give some of the guys a fighting chance .. but very few I imagine would see it that way and adopt the ' if you don't like ? Leave!' response . :/

My original post which you responded to dealt with the issue. The point being that the site, even if you don’t pay to support it, gives you all the tools needed and accompanied by a little common sense, it is possible to avoid the vast majority of fakes and timewasters. It really is only an issue if people choose to make it an issue. All a member has to do is set the bar high when choosing who to engage with, the higher the bar the less risk there is off encountering a fake etc.. alternatively lower the bar and take more risk and members may strike it lucky but are more likely to be stood up etc..

Totally this - it's all anyone that has issues with so called "fakes and timewasters" needs to know - it's within each of our individual abilities to take ALL the necessary steps to pretty much eliminate 99% of the fakes (and I personally don't think there's as many of them as some on this thread would have you believe) from causing us a problem - trouble is a lot of single guys are so desperate for a meet that they stop thinking with their bigger brain the moment they get a "bite" and that is when the trouble actually starts

No not totally that ..the issue is not being addressed here ?

To be clear the problem is misleading figures attracting new members under false representation . Fakes bulk up the numbers which in most cases is not true numbers . Makes the already disproportionate gender balance for single men even more of a challenge which they probably would not have signed into the site if they had of known about that already .

Oh yes totally that and I stick by it 100%

I think you're somewhat seeing a problem that isn't actually a problem to be honest - most people don't have a clue what the membership is before joining and certainly based on pure numbers wouldn't have a clue what the split is between the various categories or even if they did use that as a deciding factor in whether to join or not.

I don't deny that there *are* fake profiles but I also don't think there are as many as it is often suggested - but as I've said previously with some common sense and due diligence and using tools available they are easily avoided especially if you put aside desperation to get interaction.

Unless you have been made bankrupt or similar, most people can get hold of a simple credit card.. as soon as you add the requirement to add personal details like that you will find less genuine people will join. And you will find it even worse if you made the upfront fee higher. It's really not that hard to avoid fake profiles, the filters are already available to use which will narrow down who comes up in search and who can message you. Another thing to think about is why did you join this site? There are paid membership sites out there already you could always try one of them?

"May be very unpopular but I believe a token £1 credit card fee should apply to all new users. This would end the very many fake accounts both issuing pictures of others and perusing pictures of individuals that they have no right to see"

Not everyone wants a credit card

My c.c doesn't say Mrs or Mr. It's my initials.

Not everyone wants to give this or other similar sites their cc details

My bank uses my phone number and other personal details for verified by visa.

I ain't giving this site my primary email address or phone number

Con artists have cc

If you don't want an image to be seen. *Never* upload it to the web once it's uploaded it's gone forever.

Fake is someone on here pretending they are someone else. More worryingly actually lifting and doctoring a profile pic of a friend and then subsequently sending me a naked pic of the girl from many years ago - as she was having a drink with me in the local bar

That is not only fake, it is unlawful.

It is not about a guy having poor judgement and being knock backed or refused a meet. It a deliberate and illegal act of deceit that the site should be addressing.

People registering under fake email accounts then cancelling within 24 hours should be stopped from doing so again

A credit card at the very least confirms ownership and a retrievable address if required

A retrievable address? So what your saying is fab should hold bank and address details of members?

Nope.

The site works just fine for most, if you are having issues with so called "fake" profiles then report to admin.

Somewhere Only We Know

Many good points on this subject.

It is a double edged sword though.

Would the paying 'fakes'think they have a right to steal other peoples photos because 'I've paid for it' More than it being a deterant?

Then again, most 'single' men on here aren't single, so the credit card could scare them off a little.

We live in an age where sexuality, gender and lifestyles aren't scrutinised and questioned as much, and also where most people pay through plastic, so genuine users wouldn't and shouldn't care too much about using the credit card for payment (unless it was a stolen card). Plus having details of members isn't such a bad thing for general safety, just in case of any illegal occurences between members. Then again, paying by mobile must also leave a contact number when paying that way (not sure about that one).

I do think more restrictions should be bought in for non site supporters. But, the free membership is where Fab attracts potential members.

At the end of the day, if someone is hell bent on being a fake account instigator, they'll do so whatever the cost. But I do think it would reduce the amount of people chancing their arm and attract a more sincere group of people to join

"Or you could just filter "newbies" out of your search parameters and use a little common sense and due diligence to decide on how genuine a profile is - has worked for me for over three years and have never yet had my time wasted or even got sucked in by a fake profile.

A notional £1 charge to join wouldn't be enough of a deterrent to keep away the type of profile you're referring to anyway - from what I hear other sites that charge all users to join are just as full of people bemoaning fakes and timewasters as here.

The only real way to avoid them is to use your instincts and, as I said, a little common sense and due diligence."

The fake ones would pay that. Admin need to get photo verified before you join. As in what fab has already would not cost anything but might stop fake people. I had to report one yesterday. Checked photo on tin eye reverse and was found to be a stolen photo

It is about people illegally posting pictures of other people locally stolen from FB etc

A notional card charge would confirm if person is male or female. "

This was done to me with photos taken from my Instagram

Not bad photos obviously but they used my name and actual details I was totally oblivious until someone found the real me of Facebook and asked to carry on our conversation

It wasn’t too bad as it opened up the world of fab for me and my husband we liked what we saw when we had a look haha

It could have ended my marriage if my husband didn’t believe it wasn’t me!

I agree, the fake ones would pay. In addition, it doesn’t stop them doing a verification photo and THEN stealing images off the internet.

Fakes are dedicated they’d have no problem paying £1 to dupe people.

Nothing will stop the fakes even sites with expensive memberships don’t.

Just use some common sense when it comes to contacting profiles. In my few years of being on and off Fab I personally haven’t encountered as many fakes as others and it hasn’t affected my success of experiences here.

This is an interesting thread.

I agree with a lot of the comments on here, however i dont think a one pound membership fee will solve the problem.

What FAB could do, is to add a sitee supporters option into the search function.

This ould be an easier change to implement, aould allow genuine newbies to try before they buy (upgrade) and us all to filter accordingly if desired

Central

With the Internet now being mature, enough people have devised ways to use it, in order to get what they are after, which includes deceiving others and websites. Sex is a huge motivation for people, so they will go to extraordinary lengths to get it.

This site works well when users take as much responsibility as they can for their results as well as helping the site to function better.

Always report inappropriate behaviour and profiles. Learn from your own experience here as well as others, so that you adjust your own behaviour, including how you are filtering for appropriate people. As it's a swinging site, consider people who are predominantly involved and active in the venues, so that you know that they are potentially more real. If you use fab in conjunction with venues, getting to know and meet people at them, it limits your dependency on the site for new contacts, if you aren't so able to see the patterns of your contribution to the issue, etc.

I don't think I see many fake profiles here but always report everything that I view as inappropriate and against site rules. Staff levels here aren't huge, so fab needs us all to be vigilant and take some responsibility for helping to police it, as well as how we each use it.

That particular instance and indeed any other instance of deliberately using someone elses pictures as your own is of course wrong and appropriate action should be taken (reporting the profile) when it is seen so that the site can investigate and take action.

However your credit card idea simply wouldn't work to prevent it for a number of reasons:

A credit card doesn't prove gender

A credit card doesn't prove ownership of a picture

Someone determined enough to create a fake profile and "steal" pictures isn't going to be deterred by having to provide a credit card

Many genuine users would be put off joining by having to provide such details

Also, as I've said already, while I don't deny fake profiles exist, I honestly don't think they're as widespread as you suggest and are usually quite easily spotted with a little common sense and readily available tools.

The only thing photo verification proves is that you’re the gender you say you are. I could set up a female account, send a pic of my body with my user name but then post false facial pics to mislead people.

We have a strict criteria when it comes to setting up meets and we won’t deviate from it no matter how great a profile looks.

We’ve also locked down our settings.

You can’t be too trusting on Fab and you have to take responsibility for protecting yourselves m.

Be savvy and don’t be swayed. If it looks too good.....

Just thought of something else that may help deter fake profiles.

Reject all low resolution photos.

Most photos that have been 'borrowed'from other websites or profiles will have a lower resolution by the time they have been downloaded and then uploaded from various sources to other websites.

Also if Fab had their own photo checker software just for this alone it would reduce the photo thieves pinching and redistributing other members pictures and passing them off as their own images.

Just food for thought

Had a meet earlier that turned out to be fake, wanted cash and drugs when I got there...

(Had a verification as well on first profile) that was glowing, to glowing to be honest...

Reported her and she got banned, now 30 mins later she back using variation of her name, but still keeping same age/location/details and profile text, reported again, admin blocked her and she’s banned again...

Shame site didn’t block users via the I.P. Address, might prevent them getting back on so quickly and easily.

Gonna see if she come back on & report again, hopefully she’ll get bored and fcuk off totally

Equally the amount of pressure and disrespectful behaviour by the unflux or uneven ratio make lots of single ladies and couples leave createing more of a situation sadly

I totally agree. This is not purely a Fab issue as it happens on all sites. They will never stop until they get bored and fed up with it or find something else to jump onto to make their small lives noticeable. They really are the saddest of people living vicariously off our exploits like any other parasite out there. It's daft because if they want to swing then why don't they just swing.

We have a simple rule to filter out fakes and that is a female to female phone call very early on ie after the first exchange of messages on here . The excuses we hear are the usual ones but the one that is an understandable is ‘ you will know our phone number and what if you are actually fake ?’ To that we ask them to name an exact time they will ring us then they can withhold their own number using 141. We will answer as we will know it’s them . They don’t have any more excuses after that and they disappear into thin air

Somewhere Only We Know

When the video addition was introduced, one of the first things we suggested was video verification.

Members have to film themselves writing their username, date, website address and time, so the video can't be re-uploaded and used again.

The credit/debit card thing is a good idea in our oppinion. Payment via card and video verification would deter most of the fakes, but not all.

It would be worth a trial though to see how it all works

The trouble with life is that people want everything to be safe and secure and they dont want to be taken advantage of but talk to any decent lawyer and they will tell you that if you make rules too specific then you wind yourself up in knots. The reason fab works is it is cheap or free to use and is self monitored ( there are arguments that some of the unpaid monitors could do with a bit more guidance about the decisions they make but that’s another thread ) and as a liberal community we learn how to recognise which people to avoid by communicating with them before meeting. If you honestly think that making people pay for membership would attract a better class of clientele then I would suggest that you need to go back to the drawing board because having a credit card does not make you normal sane or reliable. Just saying

We totally agree. In northern Ireland there is a handful of people who join and delete profiles every single day, sometimes even twice a day. They come on and pester people and leave then come back again. We have sent feedback before regarding this that all new profiles should pay a non refundable £5 joining fee. It's the only way to stop these fakes and wasters. If it's free they will just keep adding profiles and deleting. Anybody who's genuine would not mind the £5 joining fee?
