Radius updates

I'm the updates section it would be nice if we could have updates from people within a certain radius rather than the current postcode area one?

For example I live in Wrexham, which is an LL postcode, so I get updates from all LL postcodes, which are as far away as Anglesey (over 60 miles away and a good hour and a half drive) but I cannot get local updates from say Chester (CH postcode) or oswestry (SY postcode) both which are only a few miles away, and 10 mins drive away.

Would be easier if I could set it to show all updates within, say, a 25 mile radius, regardless of postcode.

It’s so funny how everyone’s requirements are different. I’d love to be able to add a list of post codes, BS, TA, BA rather than the radius around just the one. I live in North Somerset and half of what’s close is the other side of the Bristol Channel...have to add 40 miles/mins drive.

In my last job we wanted to have a search on the website which was done by distance, when looking into it we found that it wasn't that simple.

There are plenty of sites which have the feature but to get the information ready programmed commercially isn't cheap. The alternative is to input the information yourself which some companies have done, this is a long process.

There are probably other ways to deal with such an issue which some more techy people may know but, as you will have noticed, getting features brought right up to date on here rarely happens.

That solution isn't very difficult to do, it's up to the site owners to decide if they want to provide such a service.

Pretty much what I'm getting at, something that would help us show updates from people closer on different postcodes

I get what you’re saying here OP is live on south coast, but get updates from the isle of white, it’s only 15 miles but 45 mins on a costly ferry.

Totally agree - something along the line of Google Maps travel - ie how long to get to rather than how far.

Even in big Cities rivers can add a fair actual travel distance rather than the "as the Crow Flies" distance !

That's it, I'm getting updates from places that would take 2 hours near enough to get to, and missing out on updates from people 10 mins away due to the difference in postcode. I have resorted to changing my postcode to between the 3 every few days just to see what's new in each area, which is pretty frustrating

This sort of geo data is pretty hard to get at a reasonable price. I think you can get the first part (outward code) much more readily than the whole postcode. PAF, which is the list produced by the post office with all postcodes is still very expensive.

It's still a fairly complex software task & Fab doesn't seem to have much front-end work done to it.

Also spare a thought for us in East Midlands, which spans Sheffield to Ipswich, Birmingham to Norwich, both of which are about 170 miles apart.

Dong forget that they seem to include parts of Northern Essex in East Midlands too...
