some time ago I took a break from the site, and after a few weeks rejoined again. This process resulted in a total loss of all my previous friends. Is there a means of restoring my friends list, and adding it to my current list?

No, once you have deleted everything goes. If you ever fancy a break you can hide your profile rather than delete it
