Site Idea: Send message option automated from Blocking

Thought Fab might benefit from a Blocking option with a message to the user being blocked.

As some users are blocked, and then left without knowing what's going on etc, and users doing the profile blocking often do it because they can be inundated with messages and time limited etc, it seemed an idea to try to add an automated option, when blocking a profile, to send a message - this could be a self-created created standard text, such as 'Thanks for your interest... but we're not pursuing things further' : probably much better worded than that, but you get the gist of the idea.

So, in short, the blocker would still block, as they wish, but would have 2 options: block and send message or block and not message. It would add 1 more button press, after blocking, which isn't necessarily a massive additional load, whilst helping to improve user morale, as many rejected members can be disillusioned with the site, rather than the people who've rejected them. (Of course, in the ideal world, people would just shrug and move on, but we don't live in utopia yet).

Be good to see what others think, and hope I've explained the concept clearly.

We have this option on another of our sites and in all honesty, it doesn't make the site better. People still complain

It's as good to educate people that if you don't get a reply, it means not interested.

If you have a 'block and send message' option, you can bet your bottom dollar 9 out of 10 replies will be abuse!

The devil's in the detail - atm, most people get nothing, the suggestion wasn't for people to get an itemisation of why a member wasn't proceding, potentially even any reason, but for blockers to have an option to send a brief message, such as an individually worded piece.

So, just now we get lots of members who block others, and blockees who don't know what may be happening. There's nothing wrong about using the block facility, that's a member's prerogative, and stops further contact etc, and it's a good tool to have. The concept was to give an option to say goodbye, goodluck, or whatever to the member who's being blocked, and let them know the state of finality. This would seem a mature way to end some contact that has been established, but not almost certainly won't be needed by everyone, nor for everyone who should be blocked.

People deal with rejection in their own way, and no system will ever have users not complaining - that's a fact of life, pretty much, so we won't cure those 2 ills.

I suggested the idea for improvement, as 1. people have said quite frequently that they'd like to know something and 2. I have no idea whether this has been considered before, what the potential investment would be, nor how favourably it would be received. Generally something that is an optional item doesn't have any conditional force meaning that anyone must use it in a mandatory sense: that was how I intended it to be. If it was compulsory, I wouldn't welcome it. However, I do empathise with those who have commented on blocks, hence the suggestion, as a way to address some needs. If it had huge investment implications, I'd not do it; if it was less burdensome, then it could be worth considering. As admin have said, it appears something similar is implemented on a sister site, so there's some experience, tho I don't know what exactly its form is, nor how it's used, so can't comment.

Once blocked, they'd not be able to respond to the blocker though - the message could say goodbye, or just be notification of blocking, whatever a member might want.
