A bit like Google does on Gmail. You have main, promotions and updates. I think the messages on here should be categorised in a similar way :-

Friends/Conv - messages from friends or messages that are a conversation i.e. you've replied at least once.

New Messages - messages from people that have never messaged before or you've previously had a conv with. (with a filter on who I'm looking for button).

Repeat Messages - messages from people that have sent more than one without reply. (with a delete all button).

Think this might help with those having issues managing lots of spam messages.

I think that single ladies should also be able to filter by distance as well as age. I have friends that say they get messages for miles away.

Bad enough they get 100s as soon as they join

No need to apologise, in that case there should be a "simple" mode for those that are confused by three well described lists of messages.
