MOVE THE 'DELETES' !!! (deleted messages and deleting mail)

For heaven's sake, it's INCREDIBLY easy to delete emails here - one accidental tap of the trackpad (or mouse?) when the arrow is in the wrong place and a new and unread FIRST message is immediately(!) and permanently deleted.

They've made it like they want it to be the easiest thing you can do on this site!

It's hard enough to find genuine people here, nobody wants to accidentally lose promising contacts in a way that will so-obviously offend them. Because nobody 'tries again' when their first message has been deleted 2 mins after they sent it.

I did a forum search before I posted this, you'll find that other people find this too. Especially on using a computer (I don't recall what the app is like).

Burnleyish (She/They)

I've just done a search and found one thread where a couple of people have had difficulty on an iPhone when they have caught that instead of going backwards and one person who deleted all mails by accident.

I'm afraid I think you're clutching at straws. If someone has deleted your messages, within two minutes of you sending it, it's because they aren't interested.

Clearly though you haven't noticed lol! I think it needs discussion anyway (ie more than "yes it's happened to me lol")

Is this site ever changed? Or has it been in a fixed state for years?

What happened was i accidentally hit a large yellow button saying "DELETE THREAD' right in the middle of my laptop's screen when on the messges page. I'm so cheesed off becuase when my trackpad stuck as I moved the cursor across the screen to read it (sticking is like a mouse- double/click) it felt like I couldn't miss it.

It depends on the search words. I made a few searches as I didn't want to waste my time.

How am I 'clutching at straws"?

I've read that I'm not going to get the message back.

After reading a new message on my laptop, I've just noticed that if you click the message box right at its topmost and towards the left, the mouse cursor will actually end up over the large 'Delete Thread' button! If you accidentally make 2 clicks instead of 1 at the start (or your trackpad sticks) then the delete button will be hit if the page loads in time. My heart went into my mouth when I noticed as my trackpad really is clunky!

I just think that they need to move the various Delete buttons to the side, so that this can never happen.

Or failing that, give people an option to verify they want to do it.

I realise that you probably need to be on a laptop using a higher screen resolution, maybe even using a specific browser too to experience this.. but just to reiterate, this is definitely happening to some people, and is clearly a site-based issue too (ie it happens too easily to them).

FWIW I searched for "accidentally" earlier, and "deleted" too I think it was or somehing similar. I've deliberately put a few different keywords in my own title as people notoriously use different language when they search or create new threads.

I have problems on my phone with the delete whole thread button. I've lost track of the amount of times I've reached for my phone, when the screen is active and on my messages, and accidentally deleted a whole thread. It would be useful if you had to confirm you really meant to do it by tapping again

Sadly no money been spent there are so many things that need doing.

There's an easy fix for this.

Take more time, be more careful.

If you've done it once, surely you're more careful next time you're deleting?

It's just happened again! And yes, I was careful. It's seems the 'delete thread' button shifts a little due to the message page's unique letter-adjustment formatting. (So you've provided an easy answer, just not a decent solution I'm afraid!).

This time I'd had a previous communication with the sender, so the new message is auto-copied into my reply thread (thank goodness they do that). The big problem of course is when it's a first-contact message - it's gone forever.

Also, a lot people here may just not realise that unread replies are auto-stored in the replies thread. They may just think for a good while that the deleted message is gone. I expect you and many others are very adept here, but you might be surprised how many people do struggle with this site. I can handle really simplistic websites (I even appreciate them) but this particular area needs fixing.

When I have time I'll take some screenshots, as they explain quite a lot.

My goodness, so it's a phone issue too. I haven't really used the app yet. I'm quite prone to accidental phone-prodding anyway (long crazy fingers!) so I'm slightly dreading that too now!

PARTIAL SOLUTION (FOR LAPTOP/PC WEBSITE) HERE:

I've found that I've been using the 'New look mailbox' (It's also called New "grouped" mailbox). When I changed to the Old Look one, the Deletes were in a slightly less dangerous place (ie a bit lower down the screen and more to the left). Best I think is to have a delete-verify option though, as suggested above.

Hopefully this will at least reduce the chances of my trackpad click/sticking over the appearing delete. That is the biggest problem for me I think, as it happens even when I'm careful not to double-click.
