I have noticed a box asking to type in a series of letters

above the user name and password

boxes.

Is this a random security measure by the site to prove it's not getting spammed or something ?

You'll see it occasionally, it's called a CAPTCHA. It pops up under certain circumstances and helps keep accounts safe.
