I can't think of anything else to call it but there seems to be an awfully long lag between someone logging off and the site updating their status.

I've lost count of the number of times I've messaged people who are online only to find that they aren't!!

Here's the thing. Most people don't "log off". So the site needs to decide when a period of inactivity means they're no longer "online". You might be reading a profile. Tossing off to a picture. Or replying to a message. All of which might take 3-4 minutes. So we decided on 5 minutes of inactivity.
