Local updates are a wee bit broken, for us at least - because they appear to be based solely on postcode, not a mileage radius.

That works fine in southern England, where a postcode area is small, but here in Scotland...

We're in the Glasgow postal area. Glasgow is a 50+ mile drive from here.

If you're in the Paisley post code, you could be 130 miles from Paisley, in Campbelltown.

A geographic radius instead (with perhaps an option to set how far) would be much handier....

I agree with this entirely. I have pointed out to adminstrators that the BA postcode includes Yeovil, which is 30 miles from Bath, whereas Bristol is just 13 miles away but is not classed as local because its postcode is BS. This is clearly a problem at adjoining postcodes nationwide.
