PMs in chat

We're making a change in chat so that users will need to be either photo-verified OR verified-by-others OR site-supporter to send and receive PMs in chat.

This is to improve chat room safety for all genuine users. Instances of PM spamming/abuse/harassment/etc tend to be from accounts without any of the above.

This will be in the coming week.

That's an excellent idea!!

Something else that would help newbies would be to default to either PMs off or PMs from friends only. Some of them are being confused and put off by a deluge of PMs, when they haven't quite mastered the chat rooms.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Any update on when PM's will no longer hide behind the chat screen, or a visible indication when a new message is in a PM box thats behind?

Yep we're thinking about this only concern is many probably would take a while to figure out how to turn it on and miss out on this feature. But we are considering making default for new users.

How about an option for users to allow their cam to be viewed by friends only, verified or site supporters, ie a check box for each.

Our main objection to this is it complicates something and we prefer to keep things simple.

99% of users don't use any of the advanced options we provide (e.g. the privacy stuff, PM preference options, etc). We feel that the public chat rooms are just that, public (to registered users). If people want to cam privately or in smaller groups they should probably use MSN.

I was actually thinking that it could stop some of the directing that goes on while a mod isnt in the room.

Following on from the logic that

if users could have the option of only allowing people to view cams that are either SS, Verified or Friends (or any combination) OR if admin set that restriction so that you had to be SS or Verified to view cams then maybe it would help to stop directing maybe if that admin restriction was only valid in Non directing rooms?
