Kik groups / kik addresses and similar

Totteridge/Whetstone

We've no problem people swapping kik (or similar) stuff by private mail but if threads are started, we've asked the mods to remove them starting today. There have been instances of using these groups to spam/scam people and we don't believe them to be of interest to most forumites.

Feedback is welcome in this thread.

hi.

i've been quite fortunate that nobody has spammed my group, that i know of.

although some members did not read that it wasn't a pic trade group and was for chatting in and did annoy some of the female members. i do try and vet people beforehand as to whether they had a genuine interest in the group or not.

my group is doing well and i posted it on several sites but got the most people from here.

posting in the forums does attract the wrong type of person applying as well (wankers who want wank chat), but i try not to add them.

i've had no spammers in my group that i'm aware of though. though some people do mention their group on others posts and i think they're probably either desperate for wank material or spammers.

When does a guy every get a reply from a message? It'll be the end of kik for us. Can't there be a specific place for this to happen so people don't get annoyed by it.

It's a great way to meet new people and I've had nothing but success with it.

I think the threads are good to meet new people and groups.

Never had any problems with spam or scams.

I have never seen the point in kik usernames. People have the facility here to message others. Kik really doesn't add anything.

Yes it does. It adds privacy and instant messaging. After the whole Swingfield disaster there's no way I'm logging my face pic onto this sites system. This site can easily get hacked as well. May sound far fetched but it's possible! There are plenty of ways on here to show I'm genuine. My verifications from real life meets is the ultimate proof I am who I say I am. I'm not risking my career just by uploading my face pic on fab as public or as private. There's no need when sites like Kik exist. If people on here don't have Kik or don't believe in its usefulness then fine. Plenty more guys and girls on here that do.

Well said Louisa.

We are all adults so can make personal choices about what forms of social media/messaging we wish to use. If you don't like/see point of Kik, then just don't use it.

Much easier for couples to chat on kik, we regularly have threeeay conversations going with ladies, I feel it puts them a little more at ease & as said it's more immediate, messages on here are like snail mail.Kik is more like messenger.

for groups where i want members from all over the uk it's handy to use the forums.

i feel that just one guy has contributed to this happening by bumping loads of kik group topics recently to promote his group.

don't see why everyone should be punished because you can ban people from posting for spamming the forums.

i've been banned for spamming when not actually spamming. and no i'm not disputing the ban, i could have pm for that, i'm pointing out people can get banned for spamming.

I added kik for event page and was worried I might get loads of undesirables but only a handful all polite and getting to know other members before attending

I d also like to add even with a number listed never ever had anyone call other than on event day..

FriendS however have had their telephone numbers n kik displayed on malicious people's statuses to cause aggro and been completely uninvited with nasty foul abuse and messages .

Guess it's a good thing as people on here definitely respond differently to different profiles x

Hope I haven't jinxed it now lol x

@Admin . . it does seem strange that you use automatic filters to attempt to prevent other web-sites being mentioned but permit freebie users to high-jack your site to simple use other means of communication. A ban on Kik/WhatsApp does make financial sense.

But stranger still is the number of Kik/WhatsApp users who use them saying it's total anonymous . . have they not heard that BOTH the above have done a deal with FaceBook to sell on their phone numbers? Mupties!

I got banned for 48 hrs for displaying my kik addy on the forums... Can't see what harm it can do as its a choice for the sender to send a kik message.

I actually find kik one of the more decent and safe messaging platforms x

Sending a private email message to someone on site to give them your contact details offsite is normal, once you have established that each other have an interest doing forward.

What is unsafe is putting your details into the public domain, so any Tom, Dick or TWONK can then use it, abuse it and put you in the firing line for vitriol or revenge purposes, should you politely decline their seedy attentions. That is why Admin don't want them on the Forums.

Anyone with an internet device can read the Forums, without being a member of the Site.

You do realise that you don't need to have a fab profile to read the forums. That anyone with the internet can read what is written on here, that includes a phone number, email and kik address that any fool puts on them.

I agree with you on this one.

I've had KIK & (stupidly) added it to another site's Forum once. I quickly had Admin delete my post when I got so deluged by requests from folk that didn't meet my criteria.

Likewise with a KIK Group I joined my alerts became so intrusive when others would share my info without my consent. It put me off sharing my KIK addy with anyone I don't personally know, or feel I can trust with my info.

Sometimes we learn the hard way.

Yes that's true,but!...Kik is only good if you are verified on here..I've had none verified people from here mailing me on Kik and whilst Kik is more private, there is no way to tell if they are who they say they are. So Kik only works if fab works essentially

At least with kik its easy to just shut it down or start again. Not so simple if you give out mobile numbers.

Funnily enough a fake we did kik with in the early days has just reappeared on here with a new fake photos & actually winked us again.

How do I know? Because the idiot is using the same kik address and has just changed the profile picture to the new one..The original chat we had & pics are all still there on my phone just with the new profile pic the women in them are completely different

I couldn't have said it better. Although, as a guy on here it is very difficult when every reply to my messages are face pictures. I have offered to meet up for coffee or something without exchanging numbers (if privacy was the issue). It doesn't still cut it. I might be lucky to meet someone who will understand that some careers are at stake when the pictures get into the wrong hands. I shall keep going until someone understands...

kik is better then wattsapp because you dont need to give your phone number just a username.

It works offline so you can get your messages to your mobile at any time and stay in touch easier.

It's also more private than messaging on here.

We both have kik & when we start a chat we instantly create a group. Your hubby doesn't have to read it or post, but the very fact they know he has access to everything stops all the muppetry..

Just wondering, why is there a ban? Are fab losing money because of it or something?

I love Kik, it's convenient and offers features you can't get on websites. Unless you pay for membership here you can't have proper conversations and even when you do pay, the messaging system isn't the best.

People are almost always going to prefer IM over inboxing.

"Much easier for couples to chat on kik, we regularly have threeeay conversations going with ladies, I feel it puts them a little more at ease & as said it's more immediate, messages on here are like snail mail.Kik is more like messenger.

Too many fakes & timewasters for that, So we do the opposite, meet first socially or otherwise, then do the teasing chat if we are going to meet again. Fed up with the naughty chat, pic swapping with peeps both real & fake that then goes nowhere for whatever reason. it doesn't do a lot for us anyway, much prefer the hands on approach

Just as an aside, we've just been chatting to a lovely couple we met a while ago, she was waiting for a bus home, he was at work, I was walking the dog & H was indoors with the kids.

Try doing that on here!!

We are members of a kik group in wales and its great members have met we try to vet the males so they are not cock hungry snappers

Best of all its very supportive and people are free to chat about what ever they want.

Know its not for everyone but thats life Doesnt mean its wrong or right its all a bit of fun.

I use KIK a lot, not just for meeting, but all kinds of things.

it's great for some teasing and flirting, with people who you may never meet, but its good fun.

still need sites like fab, but IM is just quicker and easier for messaging

Just wondering what the reason behind it is. Trying to understand why it's a problem in forums but not in messages?

"We've no problem people swapping kik (or similar) stuff by private mail but if threads are started, we've asked the mods to remove them starting today. There have been instances of using these groups to spam/scam people and we don't believe them to be of interest to most forumites.

Feedback is welcome in this thread.

Hmm...scamming happens here far more than I've ever witnessed through Kik.

A separate forum for Kik seems like a much fairer approach. Let grown adults make the decision of whether to share their Kik or not, surely?

I'm not wholly convinced, personally.

To be honest, not using KIK I have no view one way or another However I do know about the problems with KIK spammers that where on the forum so can understand Admins decision on this

Scamming is on every platform. Fab is riddled with phishing scams after all.

I'm constantly skipping past obvious scam profiles here. Kik has never given me the same issue in the years I've been using it. Never heard it from other people either. That's not to say it doesn't happen of course, but it doesn't seem a bit of a non-issue.

If it was for financial reasons I could understand, but fab protecting us from 'scams' that barely anyone is affected by while their own site is full of phishing? Doesn't make sense to me.

Well anyway, that's my two pence worth lol.

Every Kik user I have come into contact with has been after money or getting me to sign up to a deeply dodgy website.

I'm in a couple of kik groups & the main "scam" is they post other web sites to look at / go to..

don't do it & block that person.

On a separate note,I have noticed A lot of people with couples profiles then speak to you on Kik only to find out the guy who Wants his wife to get into it, yet he has no pictures of them together or any sexy pictures of her. I always tend to delete these people very quickly. Fakers are very easy to spot.

Some on here have their Kik Skype WhatsApp etc on their profile, is that allowed as it's also viewed publicly??

pretty sure i've seen it said that's fine. coz you can hide profiles if you want to from search engines but the forums are always public.

It depends on who's profile it is to be honest. A new female profile with a KIK address on is normally scammers, so the answer would be no to that one.

Established members etc it shouldn't be a problem

"I have never seen the point in kik usernames.

Well said too Lou.
