Feedback on android notifications

Totteridge/Whetstone

Jan 2016: This thread for feedback on android notifications, which is going live soon on mobile site.

We can send notifications of new mails (and more, later) direct to your device notifications screen. It is opt-in. The opt in link is at the bottom of the mobile homepage (if available)

Works on android phones with chrome browser (the default browser) from v42+. Won't work if you're browsing using "incognito" mode.

Feedback welcome.

Does it work? Is it useful?

etc.

The same account logged in on two different devices? Seems unlikely, but only Admin will be able to answer this. I'd expect that the most recent device to log in would get the notification.

You'd both get notifications

Although if one unsubscribed, they'd both unsubscribe

(Multiple devices is something we're still working on the details of)

I think it's a great idea. Just a little dissapoing when a notification doesn't come through and you have the usual habit of checking for mail only to find nothing there. Only thing it does is make logging in checking for mail pointless

We've fixed a couple of bugs including one where only the first notification you received was clickable.

You may need to refresh your browser cache for this to update

(tap the three dot to open menu on chrome/android, then settings, then scroll down, privacy, clear browsing data... this will log you out of some places if you use cookies)

Ok - that's the problem. Because at some point you clicked "spam" in your mail provider our email system now stops delivery. If you use a different email address it should be fine

I don't see the need for this feature. Most people can access their e-mail accounts and get notifications when someone sends a message to them on Fab.

The mobile version of Fab is brilliant, please don't change anything.

Not everyone has emails synced to their phone, perhaps it's a separate email address they use for Fab that they'd rather not have linked with their other emails, many reasons make this new feature brilliant! Don't like it don't subscribe to it.

Just thought I would leave a little feedback after using it for the past few days/week.

Firstly, I think it's a great idea and find it really useful.

It does seem to be intermittent though as I've received messages but with no notification sometimes, but I'd say I receive about 80-90% of them.

Secondly, it only shows the most recent message.. My suggestion would be to show the message preview as it is now for the first message, then for additional messages to just say 'You have X unread messages'?

Just some thoughts, but a great feature so good job!

Oh, and another thing I forgot to add; tapping the notification doesn't always take you to the new message, sometimes it'll just go to the home page. I believe this happens when there's more than one new message but I can't be sure.

If this is the case, I would suggest maybe going to the oldest unread message?

It's a little temperamental as sometimes es I will get notifications come through. And sometimes I get nothing at all. I always check just in case something comes through

It works on my note 3 but not if I log on in incognito mode, if I try it then it won't turn on. Otherwise it works well, only thing wrong is it does show the message on the screen which can be a problem in public

I already get message notifications. I set fab up with an e-mail address I don't use for anything else. I have my 'phone set to check that e-mail account regularly and play a unique notification sound when a notification e-mail is received.

So yes, it's a valuable feature for me, given that I set it up lime that before it was a site feature.

I haven't tried the site feature though, (since I have my own alternative), so I can't say if it works or not.

Since I posted, I've stopped getting notifications by e-mail.

I've not changed anything and e-mail notifications are still set to be on in my account.

Seriously annoying.

There's definitely still bugs with this.

The technology is still quite new/untested for these sort of notifications (from web apps) via the Android/chrome platform. In many ways they are blazing a trail.

We think some of the issues are due to glitches at the browser end rather than here. We're continuing to monitor + test, although it may be that a future chrome/android update improves how this works too.

Thanks for all the feedback so far folks

I'm finding that I don't get the notifications like I used to. Those that come through are for messages I've read hours before. I used to get them through immediately.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Works most of the time altho recently it can repetitively keep giving the most recent notification every few minutes after the original was dismissed. Running on Google chrome using a OnePlus 2 phone with Android 5.5.1

This was a fault we've fixed so should be OK from today onwards

Thanks for the heads-up

It works intermittently. I'm using a Galaxy S5 android.

Some message notifications come through instantly but others times are delayed. Sometimes the notifications fail altogether.

Still Teething problems
