I don't think it needs to be indicated on their profile but if there was going to be any indication then it should be in the area that they're modding

Do mods in chat have a star next to their name? something similar in the forums

How would a new user know who a mod is? Before they know it they'll get a naughty step for not knowing that someone actually is the forum police.

Just remain within the Forum Rules and you don't need to know who the Forum moderators are.
