Just a thought - how about a way to search status updates in same way as you can search forum posts?

That way you update with your current location (ie a club for example) where a search isn't that easy to do. Quite often spotted people on my Hotlist mentioning where they are which I'd never have picked up otherwise.

Alternative might be a 4square type check in?
