Hi,

We have someone who is sending spam messages in newchat asking you to visit another site.

Please don't visit any sites you get sent through spam (on this site or any site!). This particular site you're directed to downloads malware onto your machine... god alone knows what that will do.

We are working behind the scenes to fix the problem, in the meantime if you get sent a private message on newchat with a web address in DO NOT VISIT THE SITE and report the profile sending it (the profile owners may not be aware that their profiles are being used to send spam).

Thanks

Given that a username and password are required to log in to the site, are you suggesting that the password system is insecure? Has the password database been compromised? Do we all need to change our passwords?

No i think the site owners are saying that a virus on the users pc is causing the problem a bit like the msn one that sends a link.

Ah, OK, that makes sense. Is that something specifically "tuned" to Fab chat site or something more generic?

The site is secure, your passwords are secure and the login system is secure.

Seems that there is a virus/malware on a very small number of people's PCs that they have picked up from somewhere else that is passing on their details to a 3rd party. So far 4 accounts have been affected: They have been advised to run a full virus/malware scan then change their pass.

Someone has logged onto their accounts and tried to send links thru chat to an infected website (to further spread the virus/malware). If you are worried you should do a full virus/malware scan.

Someone would have had to receive the private message in chat containing the web link then copy + paste that link into their browser to visit the affected website that people were being pointed to.

This hasn't just affected our chat room it has also affected at least one of our competitors.

We've made changes behind the scenes to help deal with this issue in chat and we continue to monitor the situation.

Admin, thanks for the info. I received, and immediately reported, a spam message, but didn`t follow the link. I just wondered how these malware progs worked.
