Being able to search specific usernames is good, but even better would be a search engine allowing you to look up keywords in people's profiles!

It would need to include an encyclopaedia. Sounds great on paper...but how practical really?

Encyclopedia not needed

Honestly, it depends how the current profile text data is stored at the minute & capacity of the system.

In my opinion, it's more useful than a drop-down box is (working on a system of helped build), yet we're looking at very specific search terms. I'd love it, but question how desperately needed it truly is.
