Why can you post websites in the forums but if you send a link to someone in a message it gets blocked

It depends on the link not all are allowed in the forum. Some get removed.

Think in messages it is automatically blocked

Links are often to items in the news etc....specifically ARE allowed. Looks to similar sites to this or to blatant advertising are not and my get you suspended from forums or suspended all together!

Forum post are moderated, meaning someone will check them for solicitations (including website advertising).

Whereas emails are not actively moderated, so a blanket ban is placed to stop people using them to spam or market other sites/products.

Fair point about the spam/advertising but what if you wanted to share a forum post with someone or replied to a forum post via the private message link below each post

You can only send web links to people you have messaged with previously to prevent spamming.

Unless they are of course sites similar to fab "swinger date sites etc", in which case thats naughty using fab to promote other sites.. and they'll be blocked.
