Would it be possible for the areas to be made smaller as at the moment I search in the south east but that covers 100+ maybe make it county ie Kent?

Use the search by post code/town and miles away from it.

Near Town/City or first half of postcode:

e.g. "York", "Kettering", "YO8", "N12" are all OK

Within distance

Not quite what you asked.. but admin are phasing out the regions (least thats the impression from their previous posts), and using the post code options.
