Totteridge/Whetstone

We're proposing changing the postcode/regions to the following.

Main changes are:

* "East Anglia" introduced and areas like Norwich listed under that rather than East Midlands!

* "North" introduced and places like Huddersfield moved from North West to North (often got lost), Sheffield from East Midlands to North

* East/West Midlands now just Midlands.

Hiya - would have thought that TW ought to be London rather than South East (given you can get to it on the tube, for example)?

I grew up in the KT postcode which stretches from Kingston (obviously, lol) to where I live (outside the M25) which is classed as South East and certainly not London , but I guess there will be lots of areas which cross borders.

Maybe you could keep the Greater London section you had as well as London? Not overly worried and think the Midlands and further north will certainly be improved (as far as I know anyway!)

you might get an arguement over the TD postcode by the way.... a lot of it is north northumberland i.e berwick

some of it is england and some of it is scotland.......

hmmmmmm We can see where some people will see an improvement and some will prefer the existing groupings. Maybe users could create a custom seach cluster? As an example for us... PE & NR are going to be East Anglia, LN & DN will be North and NG will be Midlands... all of which are close to us. So we would create our own search grouping... allowing us to do local searches in one hit rather than as 5 seperate searches?

actually you have a good point there... just had a look at where I use to live, which was RM.....

so for the purposes of a search it would be london, but the closest 2 are SS which would be classed as South East, and CM would would be classed as East Anglia

so the 5 postcode search might be a good idea

Some of the "North" postcodes cross county borders e.g. some of DN are in Lincolnshire and some of S are in Derbyshire so it can't be classified as Yorkshire.

I think it is a great idea to do someting about the regions because the present system is deeply flawed. I would like to be able to ceate a 'cluster' around your own postcode so surrounding countys can be covered, so in my case I am NG, so I would add: LN,LE,DE & South Yorkshire-whatever postcode that is!. So being able to add up to 4 or 5 other postcodes to create your own 'cluster' woul be ideal.

Oh, & for all the jokers on here (& there are many!) I think we know the joke about 'adding lustre to your cluster'

Is there any more movement on these changes? The north(yorkshire) idea is good, we find we are trawling east midlands for people in our catchment area!

I think Wales needs dividing into north and south for some of the searches and the LL postcode needs splitting into east and west. I live closer to Hull than some places in my own postcode. Although alround a system that looked at distance rather than area would be best.

These are UK regions which is why we've included Northern Ireland and the BT postcode. Ireland is listed as a seperate country on the site and has its own regions.

While you are looking at the regions...

May I suggest that if possible you find away for people to define what regions they consider to be "local" when it comes to things like "local updates"?

For example, although we are and ME postcode, we are actualy located a lot closer to CT members than most of our fellow ME's!!

It would be very helpful to see the CT updates as we do the ME's.

it would be gret if you could select multiply postcodes when you are doing a regional search, I'm in the North West which is a pretty big region and I'm only looking to meet people local to me.

Or better still could you do a "distance from me" search...so you could select that you are looking for someone up to 5, 10, 15, 20 etc miles away. That works really well on a diff site I sometimes use.

"i am sorry, but East Midlands is huge without it being merged with West Midlands.

I agree, the East Midlands group area is far to big at the moment taking in places that are 'so not' in EM like Norwich, Colchester, Peterborough etc. etc. etc..

Having all the county's that constitute the East Midlands lumped in with a new grouping called the 'Midlands' will make an area that is so huge.

Far better to have a tick list of postcode areas you want to 'explore' & only those area's would come up when you open the browse page. That way you could expand your search area to include holiday destinations etc..

I'd agree with having a list of postcodes to choose from, especially for those of us who live on the boarder of two regions.

Also would be helpful when being away.

The regions south west & south east are massive too, so this is a common problem, and short of going to county level will be hard to sort to please everyone!

On a possibly related point, would it be possible to add, perhaps by way of a 2 letter code, a region next to peoples' names in the chatroms-makes it easier to see if you might want to look at their profile as they are local, rather than clicking on it and seeing they are 400 miles away.

Not usually a problem in the Scotland room I know but in busy directing rooms it could be a boon.

"I know this is an old thread but please can we have an East Anglia. Pleaseeeeeeeee!"

If you use the advanced search you can create your own personal set of postcodes, we use PE, LN and NG, but for yourself you could select NR and IP.

We feel this is far better than preselcted regions, as that way you will always get people that are on the edge of two regions. This way you can customise your searches to exactly what you want.

Would it be so difficult to list the searches by county.

Surely everyone knows which county they are in, and what counties surround it.

"Would it be so difficult to list the searches by county.

Just a quick update on this. It has effectively been surpassed by the new work we've done on postcodes. At some point in the near future searches will be proximity-based, e.g. within 20 miles of NN1 might be a search.

I think that's handy being able to search in distance but could we not just have regions instead of post codes? I don't know all the postcodes around me anyway ;-(

I am in FIFE Scotland but would like to search for example: tayside / edinburgh & Lothians / central BUT DO NOT WANT TO SEARCH FIFE as want to meet outwith area I stay.

You could always have a click box to include or exclude your own region

I think you should keep east and west midlands seperate. Places like Nottingham and Leicester are quite a distance from Birmingham. At least if it says West Midlands on a profile then I know that they are fairly local.

I don't think you should split the current areas any further, where will it end???, I suspect some people will only be happy if they get a room just for their street as it appears lots of them are not willing to go more than a hundred yards for a meeting, lol.
