why does my status disappear after 3 days when others stay on longer, surely my status that I put on should stay until I change it

I think they delete them to encourage people to keep them fresh. A lot of people re-write the same thing to keep it up longer.

You could always use your tagline to keep something up until you delete it?

I think it only lasts 3 days, but if before the 3 days is up you copy and paste the same text back into the status box, it will reset the clock and will run for another 3 days, thus giving the appearance that it's been there for longer
