Distance on profiles 14 June 13

Going live soonish:

Ever viewed a profile and not known where the town is or how far away it is?

We'll shortly be going live with a feature that shows you approximate distance when viewing a profile. Initially this will be for site supporters only.

Your privacy is respected in exactly the same way distances show on searches so only approximate distances e.g. 0-5 miles, 0-10 miles etc. The distance you'd see on a search is the same distance you'll see on a profile.

If you are on mobile and have opted into "who's near" you'll ALSO see distances based on your current mobile location. So if you're normally in Manchester but are in London on business, it's super helpful to figure out approximately how far away potential meets are. Again, for "who's near" distances we only shown the same as if you were viewing them on the "who's near" page.

If you're NOT opted into "who's near", just like it won't show you on the "who's near" page it also won't show your mobile distance on your profile.

Feedback welcome

We expect to go live shortly with this

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I love the fact its got as the crow flies distance as well as driving distance on. Now when someone tells me it will 'only take me an hour' to get to theirs I can give them accurate timings.

Is it possible to opt out of this?

Personally if i'm arranging a meet locally then i'll know roughly how far they are based on their profile location and if it's not local then i'll ask.

"Is it possible to opt out of this?"

It's not. The information we show is exactly the same as someone would see if they did a local search using the advanced search page; there is no new or more detailed information being shown, we're just showing it in a new place for convenience.

What are your concerns?

" What are your concerns?

Admin x"

My concerns are the fact that location is given within 1 to 2 miles (or at least on the mobile "near me" option it does) and that is why i avoid using the GPS option on my phone.

Although i appreciate what you are trying to do by making life easier for site users, for me personally (& this is a personal opinion) i think the distances are too close.

Telling users someone is a mile or two away also opens up the system for abuse/harassment from those users who are messers & fakes who may try to ascertain who someone is from their profile or their pics or just message randomly which can be annoying at the very least. Now that may not bother some members but it may others (me being one of them)

I may just be being paranoid about people noseying into my private life but it is my private life that i share with those i trust.

Hope that all makes sense

That may be true for the more rural areas but in a large town or city, a one mile radius contains a hell of a lot of people.

In any major city with lots of people yes i agree with you but if i may propose another side of the argument.

Some of the users don't live in big cities or rural areas but we do live in towns where we may have lived for a substantial period of time to know people and be recognisable in areas within a 5 mile radius. In such circumstances site members may not wish for location to be that accurate.

I've been lucky in life to have moved about the country enough to not be known too much even in my own home town now but i still wouldn't wish to be recognised by anyone or be known where i am to that level of accuracy.

5 miles and greater is probably a safe bet as that encompasses a large area geographically but within a mile or two is a bit too close but that is my personal preference and circumstance so may not apply to everyone

I understand your side of the argument. I myself used to have a very public job and as a result know a lot of people in my local area. At times I do wonder if I'll be recognised or not. Perhaps being able to choose how accuratly you wish to be located would be a good addition in the future. Going back to the city argument, it would be nice to go to less than a mile if you were on a night on the town and wanted to find people close by, then back it off to 5 or 10 miles when you get back home.

When you look it says for example 120+,I doubt thats an exact distance more an aproximation, because it also says its better if you use the whos near me function

when the whos near function was first available admin were aware that people wanted to maintain their privacy so they allowed you to switch it on or off,im sure they will have taken the same concerns into consideration before setting this function up

The more accurate distance only shows if your mobile "who is near" is turned on; and those same distances show on the "who is near" page already. If concerned, turn off "who is near"

It's not entirely accurate but approximate. There was a profile I looked at that is at least 10 miles away from me - unless the place on the profile is inaccurate and the distance is based on postcodes and they live just down the road

But it does help

BRILLIANT! I've been hoping for something like this for years! BEST IDEA SO FAR!

By the way some other swinging sites do something similar, although not to the same extent (giving drive time), and there hasn't been any noticeable problems.

This is the best implementation of this idea I've seen so far! Well done to all concerned.

Bath ish area

As the site version seems to be based on the first part of your postcode it covers a pretty large area even for those in a rural location. But it is only accurate (as a guide) if the postcode is correct. I personally use the postcode next to my actual one as I live on the border between the 2. My actual postcode gives me very few updates whilst the next door one is far more accurate.

Still think the mobile version should be far more accurate down to yards. If you don't want people to know you are out and about - switch it off. Why have it on when you are home, especially with the site version.

It doesn't show any information that isn't already shown on the site.

Assuming your "who's near" is turned off, it gets the location from the postcode you entered which is already used to show distance on the search page. If you're concerned locals might spot you (which is unlikely because we use first half of postcode which covers quite a larger area) simply enter one next to where you live or for city center

I don't quite understand how people think they can be stalked or outed as swingers its an aproximate distance guide given from information that you have put on your profile.....its not map to your house with a front door key attached for anyone that wants it

While understand that people want to protect their privacy I also think that some people need to think a little more rationally

Sorry Admin, I do not like this at all.

I now have a 'fake' postcode, as my village is small and by using under 10 miles, you've painted a huge 'target' on me, and I've changed my postcode to hide on the edge of a city.

I guess for those in a city, that can hide in numbers it's great; however, for myself, I wish I could switch it off

"...

So calling yourself Dumfries-bi and saying you are from Dumfries on your profile doesn't give the "reporters" the same info then? "

Not quite....there are plenty of bisexual men in Dumfries, that username doesn't pin me down to a small geographical location though, unlike this 'new' feature which you can't opt out of.

So why add a 'feature' which is already there?

"If you're concerned locals might spot you (which is unlikely because we use first half of postcode which covers quite a larger area) simply enter one next to where you live or for city center

Are you suggesting we break rule 5.3 on the terms page?

We love this new feature, it gives us a better idea of how far we or our meet might have to travel

Assuming they haven't used a fake postcode I will now show on all the wrong local updates and will have emails from people, thinking I am close, when I'm not

Surely the most sensible way to implement this feature is to include an opt out?

So those people who want it will use their correct postcode and then can be found be others and those that don't want it, don't have to break forum rules by using a fake, inaccurate and misleading postcode.

You have already been showing on any local searches with the exact same information though, we're not presenting any information that isn't already shown on the site in this change.

Assuming your privacy hasn't been compromised since you first entered your postcode there's no reason to think it will be now?

Perhaps you've not checked out the "advanced search page" but the exact same information we show on your profile is available to anyone local who has done an advanced search (and has been for the last couple of years).

If anyone local is planning to track you down and expose you, they'd probably use that page so already have this info. Most of the people seeing it on profile page who haven't seen it through a search already are probably from miles away who, for example, see your forum posts.

We're not sure it makes sense to provide an opt out of something that is already available just as easily to locals elsewhere on the site? (but we're definitely listening to all feedback on this!)

This kind of situ was what I was trying to explain yesterday. Having lived in a small village in Cambs it is relatively easy to be spotted, especially if you stand out from the norm or have anything distinctive in your profile / pics.

Guess postcode change is the way forward

I found out only a few days ago that the search facility located you very close, and had changed my postcode, as admin probably know. If you had said when I signed up that my area would be highlighted on my profile, (which you have now done) then I would have never put my real postcode in.

My profile said east/west mids border, and 'in the night garden', because I decided to put that. I didn't decide to tell people on my profile I was within 10 miles of them.

I guess it depends on whether admin care about their 'local updates' being accurate or people being honest about where they live. I don't personally look at the home page and didn't even know 'local updates' was there. Now I do.

Maybe when you sign up you should make it very clear that by entering your postcode, you will be listed within miles to that area, on your own profile page. I'm sure that will encourage single women to be honest.

I don't eat where I **** to protect myself and my kids who attend the local schools. And yes I know hiding my profile, will solve the problem, so I'll head over to do that now.

I cant wait for the threads about 'the profile says x miles but on chatting it turned out s/he/they are not'.

Another one here who lives in a very rural area, and hates this feature

Already have to keep the local to me thingy turned off, because I was actually able to tell one fella what road he lived in. If I can do that then they too can do the same

An opt out would be great but already I see a lot of false areas being used

We're not sure it makes sense to have an opt out since the information we show on a profile page is exactly the same information that shows on a local search using the advanced search page (and has for the past two years). If someone is local they will probably find you with that page so can see your distance already. As per that search page we only every display approximate distances.

Is this something that can also be used for meet searches? It would be so much easier to put in a town and search for meets nearby. And then that show in miles would be ideal.

I don't really understand all the concerns about this new addition as there is no new information it just displayed more readily. This information could of been obtained before by using the advanced feature on the site .

Me i think it's great, But like most good things it could be open to abuse by some.

However given that most people (as already pointed out) give away where they are from anyway in their username and town listing i don't think it gives away any more real info.

Unless of course those against it are saying they won't accom or meet anyone in a certain radius of their home location?

Perhaps an opt in/out button could be provided that way it would be by choice as i already said i don't have a problem with it i actually want to meet and could see it as a benefit or help.

Any update on the privacy settings for this yet? Also will they apply to the search facility?

It's all well and good women using a fake postcode but it just means the distance showing is inaccurate and the wrong local updates show
