Logged back into fab this morning for the first time since before Christmas, we had some family things we had to deal with, so logged out and haven't been on, before we logged out there were a lot of messages, read and unread, today they are completely gone.

Can anyone advise as to why, I'm assuming we can't get them back?

I think every now and then the site just deletes stuff that have been on a while to free up space its maybe been that

If your sent messages are there but not their replies, it means they've deleted the messages on their profile.

I find that if messages are left (I try to delete to save server space) they tend to disappear after around three weeks.
