Right, I know there's a delay on here of approximately 5 minutes, from logging off,to showing as off line.

But how can someone still appear in the cam room, when their profile states they've been logged of for over 20 minutes.

I have experienced this.

I often log into chat solely to use a private chat window and the chat bubble will show on my profile. I am only active on chat, not elsewhere on the site, so after a short time my profile will show me as offline (I think it times out) even though I am still logged into chat (I often see people typing/sending nothing more than a full stop to prevent them timing out of chat). As long as I do not 'time out' on chat, I can stay on chat with the chat icon showing on my profile for as long as I remain in chat.

All that said, it may also come down to how people leave chat, too...There may be a glitch that continues to show someone as in chat if they have not closed chat before logging off.

What I have noticed is that you can be logged in but if you are not actively viewing different pages or parts of the site it will mark you as off line after a few minutes. Such as writing a long message, or viewing a long thread in the forums. And will only mark you as online when you next navigate to a new page such as clicking send or the back button etc

The site behaviour looks like it mainly running on a set of caches. That means content is stored in fast memory and can then be repeatedly accessed before it is periodically updated. Content (such as who is logged in) will take until the next refresh to update. It is an old approach (from the early internet) to building sites but it is highly effective and cheap to run/scale. From an ops perspective it works and so I can see why the owners wouldn’t want to change it if they don’t have to.

The people who add a full stop to their chat is generally people on cam who talk rather than type so after 5 or 10 minutes of no chatting while on cam the site disconnects them.
