Hiding that I'm online

When I log in my profile says 'online now' and I get swamped with messages. Is there any way to hide that I'm online now so I can use the site and forums without the pressure of a bunch of people thinking I'm available right now for them to suck up all my time?

There's no way to hide that you're on line but you can hide your profile.

If you go to privacy settings the option is there.

It's when people enable 'hide on who's looked at me' in their privacy settings. It means you can't tell when they've viewed your profile

No but you can change your message filters to block anyone from messaging

but still shows you've viewed there page when they look at there home page local updates section?
