I'm on Swingers and Guys. Both are bloody good at what they do.

However, I have a FWB who is also on both.

On Swingers they are within half or 1 mile.

However the same profile on Guys is 'within touching distance'

Which is it?

Here does have ‘within quarter mile’ in big cities. There’s a couple that show up that close to me in the small village I live in

I once had someone try to triangulate me based on the quarter mile, and that was quite creepy enough, thank you. (It's also why my who's near is basically permanently off now)

I am capable of imagining what it might be like for other people.

Maybe guys are fine with being triangulated to their workplace or home. I have no idea. I bet most women won't be.

If I were to put it here, I'd make the extra detail opt in. And then I would opt the fuck out.

I rather suspect that if 'touching distance' was active on fabswingers, then almost all women would disable who's near. The list of people who were near and _might_ have some interest in sex would become a list of only men. Even most couples who remove themselves from it.

Why? Simply because although many women have sexual desires, they are also extremely selective. They do not wish to carry a sign on their forehead saying "r@pe me". By contrast, a large proportion of men are "up for it" any time, any place, with anyone that has the right selection of holes according to their sexuality.

The owners of fabswingers and fabguys understand this, which is why the who's near feature is implemented differently on the two sites. Most women understand this. Unfortunately far too few men understand this.

Wow a man who actually gets it, thanks.

From some of the comments on here I was starting to feel like if I had it turned on I was prey to be hunted down.

Why can't people understand the feature is there just to give you an idea who is close by not so you can track us down to our home address or workplace.

I've literally had messages ordering me to my nearest chain coffee shop because I'm always around it. Yes, that is where I live and I do work from home, creeps.

"You're within reasonable distance and I'd like to see if we're interested in meeting", fine.

"You're always in the same spot, I bet you frequent this Gloria Jeans and you should come and meet me. Wait, why haven't you come and met me?! You're so rude!" ... really really not fine.

I would love to use it. But I've learned that people are weird about it. A quarter of a mile is quite weird enough. Touching distance could be dangerous, given that there are some unsavoury characters that are on here (yes yes not all men, I do mean a small minority).

If someone can tell me how proximity equates in any way to interest and attraction then maybe I'll change my mind on the subject.

I often have mine on. Because I travel and 'idle curiosity'. Not because I'd ever expect that because I'm 1/4 of a mile from soneone that they're in the mood, at all interested in me or me in them, or that just because two (or three or four) people are close to eachother that it insinuates anything may happen.

It can be a useful tool to many I'm sure.

But I fully undesirable why others aren't keen.

Hence, its optional.

Mine is permanently off because it's not something I'm comfortable with but I've also no interest in meeting random people based on nothing more than the fact they are near.

I see people say how they turn it on when they go to new places but I've never done that.

I fully understand they are not all men and women can be jist as bad.

The most concerning comments on here though are from men, especially the ones suggesting that if you have this setting turned on then you 'want to be found'

I'm sure that is not the intended use for this feature but I feel messages like the one your friend received leave women feeling very vulnerable in a way that men generally wouldn't feel.

I used to have it turned on and have been "found" by two couples.

Once when walking the dogs and a couple were out for lunch and we had a chat on the street.

The other time though was when I was staying in an hotel and a couple messaged to say I was showing up very close and must be in the same hotel.

They gave me their room number and wanted me to call and fuck the missus asap.

I had no intention of going along but I didn't recognise the profile and decided to have a look. She was only 20 and they had got around my filters because he was 62.

The first line of their bio was written in capital letters saying that they didn't meet single men ever and would block any who thought they could be persuaded.

They said they would only ever meet single women.

When I told them I wouldn't be meeting them for all those reasons they got aggressive so I blocked them and turned off the who's near permanently.

Absolutely. I'm seeing lots of red flags here, I'm not shocked others can't.

I might have it turned on because I'm looking. Which isn't the same as "want to be found"

The "you want to be found" vibe makes me uneasy.

Central

In the open countryside, where the next building is are potentially a mile or so distant, just a flicker of light at night, it can be too easy to be tracked down.

Getting messages highlighting that someone is doing this, when you are isolated, is disturbing.

The descriptors are more than detailed enough
