somewhere inbetween the right and wrong

Did I imagine it or was there a little mark on the top of profiles that said if/when you last messaged that person?

I know you get the "think" prompt for repeated (non answered) messages but I thought there was one on the actual profile?

There is.

If you visit a profile that you've messaged or they've messaged you it says at the top how many days ago that contact was made.

Or even years as we discovered recently.
