Maybe because when you first uploaded the photos you've chosen public then changed preferences to friends only

They don't, they appear only for friends to see in the updates section.

if you added the picture as private: it will not appear to anyone including friends. If you added the picture to friends only, it will show in Friend Updates (not in Local Updates).
