I suspect it would be difficult for the owners to do but it would be nice if you could hide your profile but keep it available for those on your friends list.

Sometimes I just don't want loads of messages off people that I haven't previously spoken with but the current system stops my friends looking at my profile should they wish to.

Not a bad idea, but I'd suggest perhaps 2 different levels, one as per your suggestion and another that works the way it currently does, as there may be times you want to hide away completely

That is very true

When I don't want messages I put my filters up. That way I don't have to hide my profile.

Nice! I have just read the description of filters:
"

Filters don't apply and people can message if you've mailed someone before (if you message someone you have filtered, they can reply), you have winked at someone, or you are friends."

You can block everyone, but friends can still message you
