I was always under the impression that giving a verification to someone was to confirm said person was genuine. However recently browsing through a lot of profiles it would appear many people use the verification process as more of an ego boosting exercise with many people posting verifications from the same people, in one case a couple had posted 25 verifications from the same guy. Why ?

Why can't it be both? Some people like to show they are seeing regular people rather than different people all the time.

25 times- yes. But we do have veris from people we met more than once.
