Collapsing forum quotes

When quoting other people's responses in the forum, your post shows the *whole quote*. This leads to an awful lot of unnecessary scrolling to get to the response, which can be as little as a single line or an emoticon.

This becomes especially frustrating when several users all quote the same lengthy post, and it makes following such a thread rather too much like hard work.

This is solved on other forums by having the quoted text box partially collapsed – showing the user name of who you're quoting, and enough of the beginning of their post to remind everyone which one it was. Furthermore, clicking on the partially collapsed post can then expand it, in case people need to see the rest of it.

This would make scrolling through the forums much easier and more user-friendly.

I do that too, but it's work being shifted onto us that could be picked up by the forum itself. It's really common on loads of other forums.
