I'm wondering could you tell me, is the distance between two accounts a live calculation by GPS?

Nope.

Don't rely on the who's near to give an accurate location. They may not have it switched on, allowed the site access or refreshed it.

I've always found the GPS to be pretty accurate more times than not , I can even see the milage decreasing of a guy on his way to my house

It is if you both have Who's Near on and working.
