Yesterday I was bribed for $1900 & they have my actual password

I got an email yesterday (Friday 10th April 2020) from someone saying they had installed malware on the sex site (I only use Fab) and they have accessed & downloaded all my contacts from my phone, email & Facebook, plus they now have access to my camera

Normally I’d just delete these kind of messages, having received ones before from long lost, terminally ill, extremely rich relatives in Nigeria

... but they had my actual password!

They said I’d watched a video (true) & they had footage of me whilst I was watching the vid

They’re asking for $1900 in bitcoin or they’ll send the double screen video of what I was watching plus the recording from my webcam to all my contacts

I’ve got very good taste; the only vids I watched yesterday where on very fit guys’ profiles & the recording of my webcam was probably just me licking my lips & drooling. I don’t give a toss about this being shared

But I do care if someone has access to everything on my phone inc webcam

I’ve messaged admin, but not sure if I’ll get a response

Anyone else experienced this? Or any suggestions?

It is a common hoax. I got one too. They have actual passwords from genuine data breaches from a variety of sources, for example Dropbox or Yahoo. They them spam millions with demands as email is virtually free to send and a few pay. They haven’t put any malware on your Pc or tracked your usage in any way.

. You say you have been bribed have you actually paid out the $1900 or is that what they are asking for.The fact that they are asking for the money in $ suggest to me they are not UK based. I personally would just ignore them as I think it’s a con but I can understand your concerns.I hope everything works out for you.

It's crap OP. Report to your email provider as a scam or phishing then block the sender and delete the message and forget about it. I had exactly the same one, word for word. Please don't worry about it hun. Xx

Put your email address into www.haveibeenpwned.com and that will tell you where it appears on any publicised database hacks. Lots of people reuse their password or use common ones, for multiple sites and so if you get an email like this it adds a bit of credence. In all reality, they haven't been spying on you and are just trying it on.

My wife got it too yesterday. And she’s so straight laced and most definitely not on here or any other sex site (that I know of!), but they had her password and freaked her out. Change your password. I highly recommend 1Password as an app to generate highly complex passwords and manage them easily.

I had exactly the same email. I've never used a cam and I don't watch porn online.

It had my old password from linkedin which was hacked many years ago so I've just ignored it.

I know scammers are really getting bad at the moment across all areas

As I said, I’m not worried about the video (much) I just was very surprised the buggers got my password.

Your responses & Admin’s message have reassured me all’s well and it’s just a pretty clever hoax. Delete, block.

I had exactly the same email yesterday, same amount of money requested too. They did show a password which was an old one of mine. I just deleted the email, they're obviously just trying it on. I understand it can freak some people out when they see their password in one of these emails but this is what they rely on. What it does highlight is that you're not changing your passwords often enough. That's something you need to review as soon as possible.

This scam has been running for a while, just delete and forget. They probably got your password from something that you had to sign-up to, most people use the same password for almost everything.

It is worth changing your password, and maybe using different passwords for different sites. Maybe add the name of the site to the password, so if it happens again you know where it was leaked from.

Also look at haveibeenpwned too as it can highlight who might have leaked your details.

I made a completely new email for joining this site,use a totally different password

I then deleted the email app

So I've never read any emails,can't even remember that password either

When I first joined years ago I noticed people were coming up on my Facebook the same email was connected to,hence I made the changes,plus disconnected my phone number to my Facebook

For anyone who does worry about these things I'd recommend the phone I have. It's an Oppo Reno 2 and has a pop up camera so you know if an app is using the front facing camera

they havent got your password from fab or any other such site. however, adobe along with a few other companies were hacked and thousands of email addresses along with passwords were stolen. so if you subscribe to adobe in any way theres a good chance they do have your password but if you change it that will fuck them up. you will probably at some time get a repeat message but now theyll be chucking random passwords at you

Once u have opened the email they know your account is live, so,will keep sending them so delete this one or def foward to fraud, then when u see it come up again put it in your spam or just delete it, I've had it loads of times

I had the same sort thing come up two weeks ago. I knew it was a scam as the password was 14 years out of date. I have a different password for all the sites I use,plus change them all every few months. Good job I only use for sites.

They sent an email to an addy i only use on one device and that doesnt have a camera and then to another that i have never used to view anything riskè they must have some really special kit to to have footage of something that doesnt have a camera

On the subject of your webcam...

I cover my laptop and Mac camera with a piece of folded card that just sits atop the computer. Easy just to slide it to one side when you want to use the camera.

On the phone, just a bit of Sellotape as I rarely use the front camera on my phone.

But it did say I had a really weird taste in porn...

Quote: "In reality, the video doesn’t exist and the whole thing is a scam to prey on your fears."

These are all scams, no one has a video of you. The quoted password is usually from an old data leak (as per above, google "have i been pwned" and check your email. Fab doesn't store password in plain text. We store a hash, and a unique salt per user, and iterate it hundreds of thousands of times. It's nearly impossible to go from that hash, to a password (if we wanted to for example, we couldn't).
