You need to bear in mind that lots of people like to chat before playing, so please keep the volume down!!

I personally would look at the ages of the cliental and tailor the music to suit. For me personally, I like some feel-good cheeeezzzy rock classics (Bonjovi, Def-Leppard, G'n'R etc...)

Also, if you are DJing in a social area, avoid being too loud... it's nice to be able to talk to each other.

Yes, similarly lots of people like to dance before playing too! Usually a good indication of what's to come....

Whatever you're playing, keep the volume down to a level where it doesn't interfere with people talking to each other. I hate clubs with "social" areas where the music is so loud you can't hear someone shouting in your ear.

Best if the venue has separate areas for dancing and socialising, but that's pretty rare I suppose. I've never noticed a problem with having a conversation in the clubs I've visited though.

Some soul, Motown or funk. That gets me up and moving: James Brown, chairman of the board, Jackie Wilson etc.

I know it's all old school but that's how I am - blame my parents lol.

Besides you'll seldom find another genera where one minute you can feel good to the next slowing right down with someone to feel that sweet naughtiness.

you beat us to it, we find the music is too loud in clubs,

when your chatting to a potential play partner you need to be sure of what is being said , incase you misinterpret what is said and have an embaraseing moment

I`ll be honest and say I thought Chams had got it very wrong when they opened up the music room but it`s spot on! I will not be venturing into the new room as I have poor hearing and would no doubt have to drag the person speaking to me out of the rooms I can hear them! But music in the rest of the cub is at really acceptable levels for me!

Straight to Number One - touch and go

Twisted - Wayne G: starts with the lines 'excuse me - do you fuck as good as you dance, are you as hot in the bedroom as you are on the dance floor'. It's actually a song about gay sex.

These were both stripper favourites back in the day

Birkenhead/Liverpool

Lots of comments about noise levels which is so important.

We have 2 separate bar/lounge areas, one for socialising and one for dancing, so we are very lucky indeed. If a club has one big room, I can imagine that being a bit of a nightmare as some people will want the music louder to dance to and others will want to chat! The best thing to do is gauge the age of your crowd and use this to plan your playlist. But definitely encourage people to give you requests as this will give you a great idea of what your specific crowd wants on the night and you can add similar stuff to the requests on your playlist, hopefully striking the right note with your guests.

No EDM. Too many clubs play this loud banging nonsense.

I try to go for fun classics with bass in the early part then chilled sexy stuff when people are getting jiggy

Spofly is your friend. In Amours a venue I often attend has 2 sound systems one for party nights with full dmx lighting that is used for party nights to give a full nightclub disco sound level and vibe and a smaller system for non party night for back ground music and chilled out vibe. I find a mix of motown / 80 90 and chart mixes work. That works up north but in London I used to help with club decadence and no7 we used to find this would never go well as they wanted house / electro / techno so what right for one event is never right for all.

"Venus in furs, Velvet underground. "

that, my friend, is one of the greatest songs of all time and would certainly do it for me, but lets be honest, most people that frequent swinger clubs are going to run out in horror upon hearing John Cale's screeching violin drones!
