After driving 90 mins we were refused entry because we both us a stick. The girl was rude and offensive!!!! We may use a stick but our bits work as well as anyone's.

Who wants to find out????

We have visited chams loads of times and have seen people use a stick however maybe the staff member was concerned because of the amount of stairs in the place we have never encountered rude staff members ever (kat) xx

If i was a club owner and anyone turned up with a stick i also would send you packing as in that type of environment where theres likely often alot of jealousy, that stick could be used as a weapon end of accept it for what it is and maybe next time dont take a stick

Layout of Chams is set over 3 floors so has 2 flights of stairs to climb. There are no lifts so must use the stairs. Maybe not the best choice of club for people with mobility issues?

Always two sides to every story but if this indeed is the case it is illegal to refuse someone entry during to disability, that includes refusal due to any requirement for mobility aids.

If it was the case that walking sticks could be seen as weapons then they could refuse entry to women with hairspray, perfume or stilettos...all known and used weapons!

"A stick could be used as a weapon" would never stand up in court. There is a reason that the poster who stated he would ban sticks does not own a club and never will.

Even on three floors, surely the OP could use the ground floor or walk aided to the first ?

The *only* possible justification is if the main starways are narrow and form the only emergency exit. If the building is old they might not have to alter it to comply.

The bar is on the ground floor , and one playroom . Other than that the jacuzzis .

Any club has the right to refuse entry for any reason they see fit . Whether the people are disabled or not . It's up to the club who gets in and who doesn't . How do we know whether the op was being aggressive or unpleasant ?

Cham's layout isn't suitable for wheelchairs, what with steps and different levels that's just on the ground floor alone the stairs aren't the easiest.

But it is manageable with sticks.

True any club can refuse entry, but not for discriminatory reasons on grounds of race, religion or disability. If however the OP isnt a member then this is sufficient to refuse entry.

You are right that we don't know the full story and probably never will.

Also is it right that someone is told they can't enter a club because of the way they look?? (If that was indeed the case)

True any club can refuse entry, but not for discriminatory reasons on grounds of race, religion or disability. If however the OP isnt a member then this is sufficient to refuse entry.

I attend Chams regularly and anyone who has been will know it's over 3 floors..anyone with walking difficulty could and would have great difficulty getting about. Let alone in an emergency. Plus if they used the jacuzzi then who would lift them out if they couldn't get out because of the high steps..I don't think it was meant as offensive but I don't know any club that is built to allow people in with mobility issues. Yes a member uses a white stick as he is only partially sited but is always with his partner...and can easily negotiate the stairs without assistance.

Knowing Chams quite well, I would say it`s totally unsuitable for anyone more than mildly disabled. There are steps everywhere, step to go through the entrance, a whole flight of steps of a single width to get to the couples changing room, steps up and down into the jaccuzzis which a lot of people stumble on because they cannot see through the foaming water and soon! The main flight of steps from the ground floor is always a pinch point and far from ideal as I`m sure the owners will admit. Even for those who are fit, the stairs really start to play on the ankles and calf muscles after a busy evening.

OP. You say the woman who you spoke to was rude. You didn`t elaborate too much in what way. I`m really sorry you drove so far only to be refused but I can see the management`s reason being access problems. Perhaps bearing in mind your disabilities, some research before you went, being either through here or a phone call to the club could have saved you a lot of heartache!

You can exit the centre floor onto the walkway alongside the couples room, through the entrance to the "hotel rooms" and I`m sure I`ve seen a fire exit on the top floor but I can`t remember where from memory. The place wouldn`t be able to operate without them!

Err, no.

People below a certain height aren't allowed on roller-coasters because they wouldn't be able to fit securely in the safety harnesses, and would,therefore, be in danger of being killed.

You are arguing that disabled people should be banned from certain clubs 'for their own good,' despite the fact that at least some areas of the venue might still be accessible to them.

Perhaps this thread is a sign that clubs need to do more to make their venues accessible to disabled clients?

I'm guessing it's because the couples changing rooms are on the mid floor plus playrooms are all upstairs, chams is not suitable for people who are disabled. Try xtasia as they have a back entrance to avoid the stairs although you can't access all areas there either.

However as you both say you had a journey and use sticks didn't it occur to you to ring before setting off?

I just hit on a good idea for people with mobility issues.

Would a good location for a club be a warehouse or hanger. These could be separated with prefab boarding to make rooms and areas and all be on one level. Xxx

To deal specifically with the issue of Private Members Clubs being exempt from Anti-Discrimination legislation.

The best thing to do is VOTE WITH YOUR FEET and boycott those venues with whose policies you disagree.

Years ago I went through I stage of not being able to use stairs after many falls and broken bones, After the company I worked for relocated and I was made redundant I had to attend the Jobcentre, the lifts weren't working. when I said I couldn't use the stairs quickly because of panic attacks could they let the person I was meant to meet know, they refused to let me in just in case of fire and they had to sort a different location for the inter_iew.

So if the jobcentre can refuse access what so different about a club having the same concerns

True, the clubs are not in purpose-built buildings - I've had to struggle myself in clubs that were built over two or three levels, avoiding the 'dark rooms' to avoid causing someone an injury with my crutches...

However, there are steps that club owners can take in order to better cater for people with disabilities. Indeed, such steps would likely IMPROVE the attendance rates at their events.

Simple, the jobcentre CANNOT, according to current legislation, 'refuse you access,' because it is providing a public service.

Also according to your example, the jobcentre DID NOT 'refuse you access,' but fulfilled its legal obligations and made alternative arrangements regarding your inter_iew.

The point is that clubs appear to be using 'health and safety concerns' as an excuse to justify the wholesale exclusion of disabled clients.

If not you are urging a boycott pretty much on the word of a couple of disgruntled people that may or may not have been refused entry for the reasons stated... I just think the club should be asked for comment before "voting with your feet" is called upon

I was not urging a boycott of Chams. I was making a general observation of the best means of affecting change to a venue's policies, their being exempted from the penalties laid out in anti-discrimination laws.

I think that a private members club can refuse membership to anyone they choose but they cannot state that they are refusing you because of a disability.

OP did the member of staff actually state you can't come in because of your mobility or are you assumming that is the reason why?

Chams has a lot of stairs, only the bar and hot tubs are on the ground floor, changing rooms and play rokms are all up stairs.

Maybe, I say maybe as I don't know, they refused you entry on health and safety grounds. In the event of an emergency could you leave quickly and safely and not impede others, would it cause problems with their insurance if you were allowed entry.

Who knows.

Unfortunately, the Government thought it was a great idea to provide PMCs with an exemption...hence why they can, if they so choose, use 'health and safety' as a stick with which to beat disabled people, rather than making an effort to be inclusive.

As I see it it's up to the individual to asatain if they are capable of using the facilities or not. As long as the club follows the helth n saftly guidlines in their insurance. Would you prefer they let a person in with mobility issues and that then clog up the stairs in the event of a fire. I wouldn't want to put others at risk because I'm slow on stairs. In my _iew it's my job to look after myself n others. Xxx

I would prefer that venues take steps to ensure that their venues are as accessible as possible for disabled persons, rather than instituting a blanket 'denial of access.'
