I'm staying down near to Heathrow for a week in early January and was planning to make a visit. Can anyone recommend which day or evening is best.

There isn't really a "best" day, as it all depends on what you're looking for. It's never possible to predict numbers so I can't really say which evenings will be busy and which quiet. Besides, the experience isn't dictated by quantity, but by quality!
