It's been a while since we have been to VA - and only on a Sat previously.

Is there a private play area for strictly couples only on a Fri?

Yes. As you leave reception, the area to the right, just off the dance floor is for couples only.

The old "sunken" dancefloor area?"

Yes. On Friday nights it quite unusual for this area to get used. The single guys (maximum of 10) are all usually very respectful and leave couples that want to do their own thing alone. There is also an area at the back of the two play rooms that has curtains at both ends. Generally if couples want to play without any single guys, just pulling the curtains across is sufficient.

Not sure how long ago this was but as someone who is there every Friday the general feedback is quite different.
