Phones in clubs

We arrived at a club(we were on the guest list) to be told that as the event organiser was ill & in hospital they were allowing phones in the bar so people could take photos to email

to the club for them to send to her!!

They had told people to make sure there was consent if anyone was in the photo apparently, like that was either reliable or appropriate.

No advance warning either so a wasted trip for us as we felt too uncomfortable about that to go into the club.

We are regulars at this club & phones have always been strictly lockers only.

We were wondering what other people’s opinions are?

Not quite the same thing but I was in a club once where the cliquey regulars were sat in street clothes at the bar, eating pizza and all playing with their phones.

Not ideal. Shame it ended up as a wasted journey for you.

Would it not have been possible to avoid the bar area or move the location of where phones were allowed eg private room. Perhaps only allow the photos for the first hour.

Surely it should have been possible to find a solution with a bit of thought and/or compromise.

A solution could have been that a member of staff was the only one with a phone and took pics of consenting people in front of a wall, with no one in the background.

Phones seem to become more and more acceptable in clubs, sadly, due to many people using them to pay for drinks etc. I am still quite wary about anyone having their phones out as what stops them from recording/taking photos of what's happening and posting on the internet? I'm sure I'm not the only one getting worried about that?

A couple of times I had my phone with me to pay for drinks. I always felt a little awkward doing it. Now I just use my card when needed.

We were at Alchemy last Friday and I was quite surprised to see people were allowed phones in the bar/food area. We were playing pool and I am sure a guy sat on a sofa was taking discrete photos of N when she was bending over taking her shot in from of him.

They should be locked room only as they pretty much are at all other clubs we have been to.

The LL in Eccles actually takes your phone off you when you go in and keep them behind the counter. I don't like that at all and I worry about my phone being given back to the wrong person....though it's probably never happened.

I absolutely hate phones in clubs (I know it makes me sound old and moany) and think it really ruins the vibe. We went to one for the first time last month and a guy was on the dance floor with his phone in the air, turing around and videoing 360. There were people around in various states of undress and it made me really uncomfortable.

I prefer a complete ban / phones in locket set up with a pay at the end tab or cards only. I think it makes it feel a lot more relaxed!

I dont like phones in clubs and personally think they should not be out in the club area.

Happy for them to be viewed in locker area/reception, if you need too.

As for paying for drinks, we all have bank cards, that can be used. You dont have too pay via your phone.

But the "younger generation" obviously never heard of bank cards... They have to use their phone for everything!

And heaven forbid you take their phone away. It’s as if they’ve had their body and mind unplugged

But in all seriousness, we have mixed feelings on the subject of phones in clubs. Our local one allows you to keep your phone, allows use in the private rooms (assuming all have consented) which we like and allows you to momentarily leave the club to use if needed, perhaps to call a taxi or check on childminder etc. but anyone seen with a phone in their hand in communal areas is asked to leave and I think barred from future visits. There is a comprehensive CCTV system covering all such areas to police this. The regulars there will also police this if they see it happening.

Other clubs we go to like Ignite and Xtasia don’t allow phones past reception which, whilst we respect everyone’s right to privacy, does prevent us from filming private fun. It is what it is and doesn’t stop us attending.

In my view, there should always be a complete ban, with phones kept in lockers. If you really need to use your phone, you can go outside.
