Shorts, e.g. swim shorts would be ok but not trousers. They’re not common though - the vast majority of men go for towel or boxers as above.

You don’t have to be in Boxers a towel & you can ask for a large one at reception which can be more comfortable. Boxer’s personally I wouldn’t want to feel so exposed all the time
